Do you think I should case this?
    #11339087 - 10/28/09 04:38 PM (8 years, 7 months ago)

I birthed this tub on the 19th so it's been almost 10 days.

It's 5 qrts of Largefruit rye spawned to straw, manure, verm and gypsum.

It colonized fine but it's not doing to much anymore and I think the top may be drying out. (the reason it looks wet in the picture is because I mist and fan it 2-3 times a day)

but i thought id have some fruits or at least pins by now.

Thinking about casing it to keep the moisture held in at the surface.  What do you guys think?

dont bother casing now. if you really want to then wait till after the first flush.

why on earth are you misting your tub ? tubs are meant to remain closed until cased or fruited uncased ... tubs are in essence their own little habitat ... if it seems dry sterilize some casing material case it about 1/4 inch and return to fruiting conditions ...

Hmm, I haven't used straw yet, but from general knowledge, straw retains water and moisture rather well... I guess it couldn't hurt to case it though.
Be careful with using straw... I stayed at an old uncle's farm one summer 'ages ago' but I learned that straw is quick to fall victim to mold... black mold, but mostly trichoderma.

Quit spraying it.

Leave it alone it will pop it in few days.

I put a layer of verm and anhydrous water crystal on the top of all my substrate(straw/horse manure/ paper & anhydrous water crystals/coir ect.). Then I mist the verm really well and I leave it alone. This really helps them produce better.

BTW you do have some pinning on the tub. I see tiny white dots appearing. It looks shiny and wet very bad.

that looks exactly like my first tub. it looked like Elmer's glue, i forgot about the tub when it was colonizing, i left it in a cold room for like a month or more, i posted pics and asked for opinions, i ended up dunking it for half an hour, then cased it with 50/50 peat/verm, and it took off in a few days and fruited like hell, as it fruited i misted and fanned it a quit often, it worked out very well for me with the straw, and casing layer, and being my first grow ever, i have faith for the case. but i've seen plenty of beautiful uncased tubs, so do what feels good :sunny:

both these tubs were misted and fanned a few times a day. It doesnt hurt anything.  these tubs were both coir though and had fruits 4-5 days after i fruited them. im just a little concerned about this straw because of how long its taking to fruit and was just wondering if a casing would help

is this your first time working with straw ? it does colonize a bit denser it seems than other subs ... repeatedly misting staw though, to me , seems like trouble , its so prone to contaminating under haphazard care . ill push some subs to the limit with excessive misting , but straw wouldnt be one of them ... id definately case it over misting/chronic exposure ... i worked with mini straw logs in the past so never cased it before though ... shouldnt be too different than anything else ...
