The Story Of Russell The Texas (Cube) Bear

This is Russell The Texas Bear

Now Russell wasn’t always a Texas Bear. He used to be a plain old run-of-the-mill, made in China, stuffed polyester bear, who found himself tossed aside, un-loved and lifeless in a second-hand store.

Then one bright sunny October 9th day, a budding Amateur Mycologist came along, took notice of him, and Russell was rescued. He was miraculously given a second life. Transformed if you will, into the great bear he was about to become. Maybe the bear he was always meant to be.

Now the days ahead weren’t always glamorous. It was an uncertain road for Russell in the beginning.

The life giving 1 litre jar of Texas Cube MS inoculated WBS to be used to re-stuff Russell had sat in an incubator for over three months at 27C/80F, and was a fully colonized block. It was uncertain whether or not the mycelium would go on to further colonize the prepared and microwave pasteurized coir/coffee/gypsum - 70/20/10 substrate, never mind his thick polyester skin.

The spawn, being as solid as it was, had to be scooped out with an alcohol cleaned spoon, which was then crumbled into a zip-loc bag containing the substrate, resulting in a 50/50 mix.

And then of course, there was the surgery. On October 11th, a 3 inch incision was made to Russell’s bottom to allow for the removal of the polyester fill, and the insertion of the life giving substrate.

Implanting the substrate went as planned but the polyester extraction had it’s moments. It turns out Russell’s stuffing was also sewn in at spots, but a couple of extra pulls and a tug and he made it through un-scathed. In total, Russell received 8 stitches and recovered nicely.

Of course before his new stuffing was inserted, he had to be sterilized.

Russell’s skin was thoroughly washed with soap and hot water, put into a 1 litre jar, then placed inside a pressure cooker at 15 psi for 30 minutes to kill off any unwanted contaminants that may linger to inhibit a young bear’s growth, and new found life.

Immediately after surgery and beyond, Russell would bask comfortably in his lightly fanned and cool-misted greenhouse, at 24C/75F with 100% humidity. He also enjoyed the occasional light misting from a pump sprayer and twelve hours of fluorescent lighting. It was a growing Texas Cube Bear’s life.

After about two days, mycelium was  noticed to have emerged on a few spots throughout Russell’s body. By day four, there was an outbreak. Over 75% of his body had been colonized, and the distinct mushroom odour could be detected.

Then October 23rd came. Twelve days after surgery, Russell had pins!

There was only 6, but 6 none-the-less. Russell was now merging into adulthood.

At one point, Russell was becoming quite the Pin-Porn Star! :lmafo:

Here he is showing off some leg.  :wowz:

Here he is again showing off his back.  :wowz:

By the 24th Russell was donning over 30 pins!

At this point in his life he was also quite the ham, posing for the camera, showing off his stuff. There was no shyness with this bear.

Then on the 25th, the very next day, the number had more than doubled to 70! Including a little horn growing over his right eye. There was even signs of a tail immerging from his lower back.  :whoa:

Russell’s new growth was really taking off, as can be expected with a bear of his qualities and stature; misted and fanned regularly while basking in his little greenhouse without a care in the world.

By the evening of 27th, we had come to realize that Russell had just about reached his potential.

Most of the white mycelium was turning blue. The fruits where approaching their yield with most of the caps ready to burst open and disperse their spores in an attempt to insure the future of the species.

On the morning of October 28th, Russell the Texas Bear was all grown up. He happily made it to adulthood, and turned out to be a fine looking bear to say the least. :super:

It was now time for Russell to have a well deserved break. He’s been bulking-up in his greenhouse for 17 days now and needed to shed a few grams. Not that he wasn’t enjoying it, he loved all the grooming and constant care; especially the photo ops. He just had to get some weight off his shoulders.

Russell needed a day at the Spa! :lmafo:

After some ’going over’, and a couple minutes of picking and cleaning, Russell was allowed to soak in a cold bath for 24 hours so he could re-quench and loosen up a little for his return home, back to the greenhouse that he enjoys so much.

By the end of the day, Russell had shed 24g of sweet smellin' Texas Cubes.

Not bad for a little castaway!

Nex.

Hope Y’all enjoyed the story as much as I enjoyed writing it. Kinda’ silly I know, but it can’t always be about the science. Gotta’ have a little fun once in awhile!

This was a fun project. It’s going to be interesting to see what the second flush does.

I should mention that this isn't a unique idea. RR has done this in the past with a stuffed animal Shaman that his wife made, I think. He's also done it with a bra and of course the bible, plus many other things.

There's also an on-going contest to see who can grow from a stuffed animal.

Today is a sad day.

Just when I thought things were going well for Russell, and he was going to grow old and produce another flush, I found a rash on his back. A green rash.

Seven days after his day at the spa, his first dunk, Russell has contracted the deadly Trichoderma, aka Trich, and has to be put into retirement.  :tombstone:

It was good while it lasted and these things do happen. Most likely due to his polyester fur.

He did put out a good first flush and it was a fun little project so all and all I guess I really can’t complain. :smirk:

id like to say a few words about Russell

he was a dear friend to all of us, a very energetic little guy

he filled all of our hearts with joy and had a positive influence
on every one he came in contact with

always had a smile on his face even through the toughest of times
may peace be with you always and forever
R.I.P Russell:sad:

It is looped.

I know it's a bit rough but I didn't plan doing an animation when these pics were taken. It was done by request.
