martial arts are good, but the best defense is wrestling.  The best MMA fighters have a very strong background in wrestling and didnt start any  jujitsu or a stand up until after they got into MMA

I wouldn't say wrestling is the most useful.
It depends of what you what: self defense, train your body, get into the martial arts spirit and become a modern Miyamoto Musashi (don't try though, just a look at what Pris posted), show off, drain your body from all the energy, all the stress you pile up everyday...

For example, ju-jitsu can be a good all-around martial art. It will probably depend of your dojo, but it contains stand up fighting, ground fighting, judo, and self-defense. The main objectives differ from one dojo to another (I saw one that was mostly about self-defense for example) and sometimes the rules too (low kicks allowed or not, punches allowed or not, ...).

And I think I heard a few people talking about their dan, so there might be a few.

i would say do Kenpo as a good all around art.

jujutsu is way to grappling oriented to be all around, and Kenpo is the melting pot of martial arts

Kung-fu 4 years, no colored belt system for me though we had a sash with different colored stripes on it. Our master didn't like the grading reward system himself but he said that the western students, parents needed to see a gesture of progress to validate their childrens continued participation. I almost made it to my black belt (equivalent) but we ended up moving away.

I think any discipline is good as long as you like it and you get satisfaction out of it. In a real fight, it's not that simple as grappling, over kick boxing, wrestling, over boxing, it's the better smarter, sometimes stronger and luckier man that comes out on top.

I've trained for 7 years in Jeet Kune Do.

Martial arts definitely changed my life for the better. I am more in shape, I feel safer in scary situations, and I feel more mentally relaxed after training.

To survive a real fight with a dangerous person you should have some knowledge of: striking, weapons, and grappling.

Knowing how to improve your chances against a gun/knife/club is a very useful skill.

Most fights start from a standing position, so knowing how to strike an enemy is important.

Many fights end up on the ground, especially after the combatants exchange several strikes. Knowing how to subdue an opponent you do not wish to harm seriously, as well as escaping from underneath and opponent, are essential skills.

I'd have to say jeet kune do is more of a melting pot... take everything that works in a real life situation from any martial art, and put it all into one

we used to train with broken pool ques, bar stools, and other common things that could be used as weapons.

it's also very individual oriented... a good instructor will focus on what seems most natural to YOU... not as rigid as most martial arts, if that makes sense

there's a lot more actual sparring as well, get you used to actually fighting, instead of punching the air over and over.

it's basically the art of kicking the shit out of someone before they kick the shit out of you, in the most efficient way possible

very difficult to find a school that teaches it... at least around here

Francis Fong teaches JKD and Wing Chun, he studied under Ip Man with
Bruce Lee and studied JKD with Innosanto under Bruce Lee, Fong's was the
only place I've managed to hit a cop without going to jail, I used to
take my younger brother for classes, I got to participate a great deal

the majority of my learning is with Jow Ga, it's similar to  JKD in the
aspect it's a newer form and is always evolving, my training was much
less formal than schools give, same sort of tools you had used

a 9 year old kicked my ass, he made me beg so his father taught me

I have trained for a while in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and just now have started training at a MMA gym that teaches MMA as a whole.  Incorporating striking, into takedowns, into grappling, etc.  It's pretty awesome and effective in something like a real street fight if you ask me, and a damn good workout as a bonus.

Has anybody else trained at a MMA-based camp/school/dojo/whatever the hell other names I've heard them called

has anyone heard of Satanic Combat Science?... http://www.dpjs.co.uk/violence.html

Quote:

Xloptuny's Satanic Combat Sciences is a combat science (not a martial art) which takes into account modern weaponry such as guns, weapons of opportunity and other real-life situations. There are other modern combination combat arts out there, but Xloptuny's Satanic Combat Sciences is likely to be the most practical, accessible and useful combat science.

the link on that page that used to take you to a more in depth description doesn't work anymore... But I remember reading about it a few years ago... fuck that shit sounds brutal!

I can't find any info on it anymore, only person I've talked about that has any experience with it was a well known member of the Church Of Satan... they keep it pretty secretive I guess... said it was similar to russian combat science, but geared more towards practical street combat instead of military.

i'd love bein able to say "BACK OFF... I KNOW SATANIC COMBAT SCIENCE!!" :hellfire:

Yup I train at an MMA gym in Phoenix.  After last weekends Grappling World Team Trials we're the #1 ranked No-Gi grappling gym in the country.  7 people going to the world games.

Yup I train at an MMA gym in Phoenix.  After last weekends Grappling World Team Trials we're the #1 ranked No-Gi grappling gym in the country.  7 people going to the world games.

Next year.... sigh...

Oh right on.  The worlds are over by me in FL, if I remember correctly.  Should be pretty awesome.  Do you compete in NAGA or similar events?

Yeah they are in Florida this year.  (Last year they were in Albania... and now Florida?!)

I'm just getting to the NAGA/Nationals level.  I hope to place well in both competitions next year, thus far I've only done local grappling tournaments and I'm currently recovering from a nasty shoulder injury and getting ready for my first pro MMA fight in December.

check out krav maga for a good over all self defense/in depth fight technique.

it is used by the Israeli army to train their soldiers in hand to hand combat, and in my opinion is one of the best all around martial arts to get into for just learning technique and mental training

Oh that's awesome man.  Let us know how the fight goes, I hope you have a quick recovery.  Have you done any amateur MMA fights?  By pro I assume you mean the other guy is a professional fighter or you plan on becoming one.

I'll get the fight uploaded here shortly after it happens (as long as I don't get my ass kicked like an idiot )  I'm gonna try to get a shroomery patch for my shorts too.

And yeah I've been in all sorts of random amateur competitions, some grappling some striking, but I'm about ready to get paid.
