ID Request: Probable P. Azurescens and unknown.

Everything is bruising blue. I'm wondering if the left 2 are also Psilocybe Azurescens that have just dried in the sun.

Habitat:
All 4 were in coastal grasses, left 2 were exposed to direct sunlight, right 2 were tucked away in more covered forest. Pines were overhead.

Gills:
Picture color is accurate. Tan, close gills.

Stem:

White to off white, bruised blue by now. 6-7cm long.

Cap:

Pictures are accurate. Left 2 (that were in direct sunlight) are faded straw, right 2 are classic caramel of P Azurescens.

Spore print color:
Left 2 have printed purple brown, right two have yet to print.

Anyway, is there any chance I have toxic look alikes here? It feels like I have found my first actives of the season, and like I've struck gold with P Azurescens, so I'd love to be sure.

They are Psilocybes and they are active, but it ain't Azures, I'd say.

Looks more like Friscosa/Cyanofrisosa.

But I have to admit, that I have absolutely no knowledge about these species, so the ID can be wrong as well^^
They just "look" that way:smirk:

According to Stamets P. azurescens has a pronounced, persistent broad umbo.  That's a knob in the middle of the cap.  FF is probably right.

As mentioned, they are indeed an active Psilocybe. 

The stipe is not white or even pale...  I am pretty sure that these are not P. azurescens nor "Cyanofriscosa".  I don't see an annulus, but they remind me of the US, West Coast variety of P. subaeruginascens.  It looks like the stipe has been handled quite a bit, so perhaps any subtle veil remnants have been rubbed off or crushed against the stipe.

Tweaker, what state are you in?  Oregon?

Couldn't ask for a better difference of opinion.

Alan, without the umbo and other missing features, what makes you think these are the real deal?

Edit:  I do see a slight umbo on the third one from the left.

I really do not think so.  Look at the colours...  Does it not remind you of P. subaeruginascens?

And look at the gills- they are paler and more pink than P. azurescens, and the mushroom on the far right in the first photo has slightly wavy lamelle.

Hmm, I didn't realize subaeruginascens was a choice out on the coastal grasses.  They don't look like cyans to me.

I am with Alan. From having looked at quite a few Psilocybe azurescens lately I was going to say they are azures as well. They look exactly like what I harvest from my patches.

Got pics?  I don't doubt you because few things trump personal experience from an experienced person.  They just don't look like the classic Azures I'm used to seeing.

These mushrooms are a rare find these nowadays.

Remember when you did not think that Panaeolus cinctulus grew on cow shit?

I had a conversation one time with Peter in which he described a Psilocybe species which was most closely related to P. subaeruginascens but grows on dung...  So P. subaeruginascens (or a related species) growing from grasses would not surprise me much.  Also, this West Coast variety has only recently gained notice and there are a very limited number of documented collections in the wild, so I would be open to the possibility of this mushroom thriving on other substrates.

Hell, there was a time when it was believed that P. cyanescens could not fruit on or under redwood litter, but that boundary has been disproved as well.

I have only found P. azurescens a couple of times, but those, and all of the photos I have seen do not resemble this collection much at all.  On the other hand, the P. subaeruginascens I had a look at yesterday seem quite similar.

I'm sorry, but the two fruits on the left side look more like Cyans than Azures to me. I know that there's quiet a variety in the appearance of fruits within a species, but -for me- they don't really look like Azures to me.
At least not the ones on the left.

Looking at your pics, Kahuna, assures me even more. Yours look like the classics Azures for me...

i'd put my money on P. azurescens, if largely due the the location and habitat.

btw: those are umbonate. it's quite visible in the specimens at right. am i the only one who sees it?

i should also note that my collections from oregon several years ago where atypical of azurescens, and i had often suspected some where P. cyanofibrilosa.

Those are pretty ambiguous photos.

I do see the umbo.  But that does not rule out either of the main suspects.
