autoclave help please
    #11335424 - 10/28/09 12:42 AM (7 years, 11 months ago)

Ok so i have a castle #777 autoclave, and am currently 'claving some half pint jars of verm:water:brf 2:1:1 substrate, and it will reach max pressure at 20 PSI, 250 degrees F, how long should i clave it for. also i am under the impression i should let it lose pressure on its own instead of venting... any autoclavers out there?

thats odd its a little hotter than usual with the jars in there, by about 5 degrees. that is compared with just tools(forceps and other metal instruments). interesting observation.  Also if anyone knows if they will gain/lose water in an autoclave, that would be good to know. I covered them in tyvek/foil, but the pressure might get some steam in there.  I'm starting to think i might want to get a PC, just for the fact that there is more knowledge on this site about using them.

:pm: me if you have questions about lasers

Although i may advise others in a general way regarding all types of mushroom grows, and may even post question from other forums about growing "active" mushrooms, i only grow non-"active" mushrooms and edibles.

Please make sure you use a high flame to get it going, then once it's up to pressure turn the flame way down. Otherwise you'll have a burned substrate.

I'm not sure if your autoclave has a weight on it that will rock around as steam tries to escape. If it does, just make sure it's gently rocking when you turn the flame down.

I never knew that RR doesn't let his weight even move.

I let my weight just move ever so gently after it gets rocking. I thought if the water wasn't boiling inside then the PSI decreases.

I guess it maintains with just a lil added heat once up to pressure.

i get it up to pressure, so it lets off steam once then lower my heat so the weight does not move and the pressure starys at 17psi (my cooker does 20 psi before full release)

An autoclave is a standalone electric device used for sterilizing medical/dental/tattoo/piercing equipment, and does not require a stove top or flame.
