How do I remove critters from fresh picks?
    #11334886 - 10/27/09 11:18 PM (7 years, 11 months ago)

What is the best way to remove critters from my pickins'? I tend to see very small grub things or spiders in my bags sometimes, and can only imagine what else has yet to be found.

Should I toss the mushrooms on a cookie sheet in a warm oven? How will this effect potency?

Any information you can offer is appreciated, thanks!

do it the natural way...hand pick em. it takes more time but you will appreciate your findings more that way.

Manual removal is good for large bugs but drying them as soon as possible is the best way. Once the mushroom starts to dry out, most bugs either die or move out. Drying also stops eggs/larvae from developing.

The best way to get rid of natural critters is down the hatch.

Myco: I do handpick. I'm confused by your response.
Karode: Ok looks like I'll have to dry these out soon. I've had them for a couple days now in a bag and they are still not dry.

Thanks!

Of course!

@watts: Yeah get them dry if you don't plan on using them in a couple of days otherwise the bugs will eat them for you.

Lie your fresh picks down on white paper, any bugs will crawl right out within a few hrs

In my experience, bugs and spiders indeed flee, as soon as they have a the opportunity to do so.
Slugs, on the other hand tend to stay where they are and dry together with the mushrooms.

In order to "save" the slugs life, I'd remove them, when I see them, simply by picking them up with the fingers.

Every time I spread my pickings for drying, I have a jar standing right next to the pile of fruits, where I can put any kind of living creatures in, as soon as I find them (I don't really want them to infiltrate my house too much^^).

When I'm done with my job, I simply put them outside...

I put them in a sieve, and put them in the oven on a really low heat setting (like 30 degrees) with the fan blasting.  The worms don't like that too much, and usually bugger off before doing too much damage.

^ Exactly my technique, but I don't use a sieve, I spread them out on baking paper on a tray and place the tray so the fan blows right over the mushrooms. I also crack the oven door open a little by placing a little ball of aluminum foil between the oven edge and the door. That way the moisture gets out quicker instead of being circulated in the oven.

Well, this might work, but only, when you're hunting results are "small" enough.

If you come back with several kg of Cyans or something, this procedure would take way too much time. I guess not too many people have that "problem", but for me, this wouldn't work at all:crazy:

also a couple of ladybugs and a praying mantis will do the trick in a matter of hours.

I find that wrapping them on paper and putting them in the veg crisper works, they dont like the cold and try to get the hell out as soon as they can. I usually put them inside an open ziplock so all the bugs stay in the zip lock.
The shrooms are unharmed and the bugs are all in the bag trying to craw out of the "frozen" hell they are in. After I just toss the bag in the garden so the bugs can escape, then I check the shrooms for more bugs, usually they've all gone.

If you have a big big batch maybe you can do several bags

You can also smoke em out by doing the same process but giving a couple of puffs into the bag. they hate that too, make em mobilize the heck out of your shrooms faster.

I realize this sounds kinda weird, but its worked every time for me

I split the stipes and use a fine soft art paintbrush to brush out gnat maggots.
I then blow the remaining maggots out of the gills and dissect the caps as nessisary, then dry as fast as possible. the faster you dry it, the less gets eaten.
