Need ID help - PNW
    #11334409 - 10/27/09 10:13 PM (7 years, 11 months ago)

I picked these two hours ago growing in a "pasture" setting that had no livestock.  I am in the suburbs N of Seattle and we've had significant rainfall in the last two weeks.

The gills look tan or very light brown.  They attach to the stem.

The stems are irregular (bends and kinks), white/grey and are larger and exhibit bluish bruising near the base.

The caps appear to be yellowish but all specimens collected had matured into a mottled greenish/blue color before I harvested them.  The cap appears to be shiny or slimy on top.

I am not certain of the spore color just yet.

They smell just like Stunzii and Cyans that I've picked in the past...

These look to me like they might be Baoes - but since I have no experience with this species I thought I'd ask around...

They are in the Stropharia aeruginosa / caerulea group.

Not active or toxic.

I've read stropharia aeruginosa is toxic in a couple sources but none are very specific, why do you say otherwise?

From Mushrooms Demystified:

"Edibility: Not recommended. It is deemed poisonous by many authors, but is supposedly eaten in Europe."

From The Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Mushrooms by Gary Lincoff:

"This beautiful mushroom has long been suspected of being poisonous, but there is no evidence to support this belief."

From Mushrooms of North America by Roger Phillips:

Poisonous

From Psilocybin Mushrooms of the World by Paul Stamets:

"Activity suspected but not known.... This mushrooms is historically known as poisonous, perhaps because of it's psilocybin content. (Some books still report it as poisonous, without providing elaboration or references). Analyses of specimen from Washington found no psilocybin or psilocin. I know of people who have eaten these mushrooms with no effects. In Europe it is thought to be edible. Since the consumability of this species is questioned, caution is advised until the biochemistry of this species is studied further."

From Wikipedia:

"It is deemed poisonous by some authorities, although effects are little known and its toxic constituents undescribed."

From Mykoweb:

"Active species in California... Psilocybe aeruginosa"

It just sounds like everyone is confused.....

Indeed, very confusing. The only thing I might add is that Roger Phillips tends to have a rather spastic stance towards mushroom toxicology. He'll list just about anything as toxic or deadly which doesn't particularly please him in a culinary sense.

My mushroom guide says it's edible after detaching the head skin. Though it's not supposed to taste very good:crazy:

Sticking to the language of these forums:

Nothing's wrong about German. The quotation marks were used a for a certain reason:wink:

The "unfortunately" referred to my assumption, that Twiztidsage can't speak German, that's all:shrug:

Keine Sorge also :smirk:
