Has anyone seen this before?
    #11333330 - 10/27/09 07:58 PM (7 years, 11 months ago)

I posted something about this contam before and the advice i got was to pc for 90 min @15 psi and make sure the rye was dry before putting it into the jar.
The stuff on and around the grain is like a brownish dust.  When opening the jar and removing the grain brown fog comes out.
Has anyone else had this problem before? If so how can i prevent it?
THank you

PC'ing dry grain doesnt sound like it would do any good first off. second, did you soak your gains first on your other grow attempts? That and pc'ing after the soak with water in jar (follow gain tek) should get what the fuck ever that brown shit is to go away. other than that, have fun with your brown shit. (as i like to do)

Why would you want your grain dry before pressure cooking?

The point of soaking your grains is to germinate the bacteria endospores, so that way when you pressure cook you can kill them. If you don't do this, you will likely get contamination before your myc. colonizes.

Also mushroom spores require humidity in order to germinate themselves. They can't germinate in a dry environment, you are supposed to pressure cook WET grains, and keep the jars SEALED after you pressure cook in order to retain moisture.

That's brown mold, maybe. The puff of dust could have been billions and billions and billions of spores.

Did you simmer your rye after you soaked it? Before you put it into your jars?

If not, you should have.
