BRF jars and rust... **Picture Update!**
    #11332713 - 10/27/09 06:27 PM (7 years, 11 months ago)

I'm really big on BRF jars...I have made tons and tons of them...My latest batch is about 100 jars...and 80% of them are getting this reddish brown looking marks on the bottom of them...i have seen them before on my previous jars, and just thought them to be contams, but last night it suddenly hit me, that they aren't contams. I came to the realization that I BELIEVE that i forgot to wipe out the jars after drilling the holes in them...leaving little shards of metal lid on the bottom of the jars...meaning that those marks are the metal...and its orange from rust...

So my basic question is has anyone ever see this before? Or had the same situation? I don't think rust hurts the mycelium or growth...but i would like you opinion on it and what i should do, whether it be cut out the rusted parts, or leave it as is, etc...(the jars are germinating fine...no delays....kind of slow in colonizing on the bottom of the jar, so i was planning on still dating them for birth a week after full outside, and bottom germination.)

sorry for no pics...my camera is MIA

ok, here's the pics for you guys...prettttttttty sure its rust...the other one with the round looking thing is i dunno...looks kinda weird...

I have no experience with this  but think the  only problem might be  when you harvest  the fruits and some poor devil gets a nice sharp shard in their gum when consuming

A picture could help, but I've had something that sounds like this.  It was rust.  Since then I converted to plastic lids.  They last damn near forever and do not rust.

Worth every penny and they are dirt cheap.

Just my two cents.

As to whether it hurts helps or does nothing for myc, I haven't a clue.  Maybe a TC will chime in.

Could be rust, probably metabolites though. I thought I had rust in my first jars but it turned out to be metabolites.

If it's rust, it's harmless; you can leave it safely. Scrub your lids with a scrubber next time they are off the jars. Or go to plastic lids.

If it's not rust, it might be a big deal. Or not. Pics would help.

If it's rust you can see a difference from metabolites though.  At least after you've seen them both a few times.

That's why a good clear pic would help out here.

It's got to develope a bit for me to tell the diffrence. if it bleeds  brightish orange then it's metabolites but if it bleeds brown/dark orange then its rust IMOE.

When i drilled holes in the lids of some of my jars, little bits of metal flakes fell to the bottom and I didn't rinse/wipe them all out.  After using said jars, some of them developed little rust spots on the bottom.  I've used them again afterward with no problems.

That's not rust.  I suspect the jars are contaminated with bacteria.  You'll know for sure when you birth them by the smell.

Some of that looks normal but the giant mass in the middle looks nasty as fuck! That's almost exactly what my jars looked like (besides the nastiness) and they smelled, birthed, and are fruiting just fine. (actually the one jar was a bitch and a half cause it formed a seal at the bottom but i digress)

Edit: Could be from all of that condensation and whatever other X factors / yay I was partly right saying it was metabolites. :rasta:
