Thickness of slices

I am trying to follow the 50/50 casing tek and i just can't seem to come around to the idea that the slices should be 2-3 inches thick. It seems a bit too thick to me. is this the right thickness?

Also, 2 of my jars (pf tek) aren't showing any sign of colonization while the others are. Can it be that it is colonizing a bit deeper into the jar rather than near the surface?

And one more question.. should i put my casing bin in my hole-less aquarium or should i put it in my hole-filled fruiting chamber? (rubbermaid container lol)

Slices of cake? For tubs, 2-3 inches is a little shallow, 4" is standard.
