1. cuz law is my fav subject 2. he talked a lot about the public misconceptions of how they function, the discretion used when deciding whether or not to press charges.
Ex. If there's a kid who steals beer from his neighbor's garage, do you go after him with burglary and make him a felon or what? On one hand, yeah he did it, but the penalty for such things is pretty long lasting.
How public defenders here in madison have anywhere between 3-500 open cases at a time.
Should the state even intervene? and how victims feel cheated in accidental deaths.
"The system is greatly stacked against the poor" mainly due to them not being able to afford attorneys.
Why prisons are overcrowded, why more police isn't the best answer, how since there are more police, they invariably arrest more people, which means that the DA has less time and must reallocate resources to the most serious crimes, leaving a lot of lesser crime victims disenfranchised.
etc
pretty cool
and then how some jurors thought that CSI was real and how he has to deal with them (kinda funny)

In my law class in High School we had the assistant DA come in, plus two of the biggest defense lawyers in our county and a district magistrate. We also had cops, the emergency response vehicle, and some other things. It was pretty fucking cool. They all had hilarious stories, too

in some places if you get arrested, you'll be prosecuted, they take advantage of the fact that you're poor, offer you deals for time served after keeping you for several months prior to trial, for many it's about conviction rates and nothing more, they figure high conviction rates are the key to reelection

he mentioned everything you just said.
Including that 'offering deals' is often BS since the police don't have the authority to cop deals, only the DA (who most of the time doesn't go to questioning) and even then, the judge and decide not to accept the lesser sentence.
Deputy DA isn't an elected position, just the DA, and yeah we've already mentioned a ton of times in class how popularity plays into the law.
