ID Request
    #11330301 - 10/27/09 11:04 AM (8 years, 1 month ago)

Hello!
It's great to have a place to ask for ID!

I live in north Florida in the Destin vicinity, it has been mild and wet here for weeks. There are 16 of these clusters in my front yard, under a partially dead tree that regularly drops small limbs that are gound up by the mower. Roughly quarter size and in these large clusters. Thanks for any help!

Do your clusters look like this?

You have Armillaria tabescens, the "ringless honey mushroom", I'd say.

Uhm, yeah. They do that when they grow old.

Read up on them some more here.

They are edible (and not bad at that) when well cooked/fried only.

I'm just not comfortable enough with one opinion on these little buggers but if they are edible I sure like to hear about it.
I was doin cow patties in the mid 70's give me a break man we picked enough to do parties of 50 no prob back before the evil people attacked us.....

You ever been to a shroom party with 50 people trippin on picked this morning caps? I personally liked them fried and on a burger, but them days are long gone. I dont think I can get up enough energy to laugh that hard for that long.......

What are they and can I serve them with a steak?

I'm willing to provide you with a second opinion. These are ringless honey mushrooms, armillaria tabescens. They are considered a good edible, although allergic reactions have apparently occurred regularly. It is advised to cook these thoroughly before consumption. This also reduces the slightly bitter taste. I haven't tried them personally, but I'd feel safe eating these.
