Quit for YEARS(4+) Struggling a little now. Can you RELATE?
    #11330064 - 10/27/09 09:56 AM (7 years, 11 months ago)

I love mushrooms, and mushroom growing. I really do.:heartpump:
And I find it strange that I ever stopped. Maybe it was my GF, maybe it was my jobs, or laziness. I don't know what it was..... because now I'm more impatient then ever!

I pulled off something small at a nasty ghetto apt. before moving again, twice! Long story... :snowman:

But that batch mostly failed. Even the jar I spawned to poo was contamed slightly.
I had to pick out green kernels with a hot knife as it colonized. But it did fruit. It was tiny, but quite cute.

So since then I've banged out two more small batches. One of which an unexperienced friend had too much involvement with. I went to work, and in his defense, told him, to use the kettle to rinse the WBS. But don't let it get too hot.
Then soak.

So we both fucked up.

My latest batch looks,ok, two of four are colonizing. But it's painfully slow.
And only one jar really looks nice. And even that one should be MUCH further along.

I've lost that simple ability to eat a few grains to judge proper moisture content.
I used to be fairly good at that. Tell me I won't have to weigh grains. That's too many steps! :P

Anyway, maybe it's just me.....
But after being out of the game for so long....

This whole hobby seems almost mystical, and esoteric.
Like it's all based on magic and elves or something.:voila:
And that good results come from praying, or killing a goat.

I'm exaggerating, but can anyone relate to this?
This feeling of losing some skill and intimate knowledge of growing?

Couple of things I've concluded.
The spores I'm using are old(at least 9+months, maybe a full year or more)
I need to carefully select bags of WBS until I find something that works well again.

And it's finally time to try RYE. Something I've always wanted to do....
(even my latest popcorn effort sucked) Though again, weak old spores)
And I MUST begin to use, and then master Agar. I've known this for years.
I know all the pros. I get it. Agar is wonderful. I have tons of knowledge when it comes to agar but ZERO practical experience.

Can anyone relate?
Offer advice?
Or just call me a Myco-pussy?

If this doesn't belong here mods, I'm sorry.
But I figured this was a sort of casual mush cult sort of question/cry fest.

So...
Find RYE.
Cook some Agar up.
And in the meantime, cook another batch of WBS.

God I hope I'm not stuck here a month from now.
Oh, and I want to get into injection ports.
A lot has changed. And I feel as though I'm now playing catch up! :strokebeard:

That's the best way to tell- I'm sure the ability will come back to you.
Some things have changed, some have stayed the same. There's a new focus and emphasis on lighting and a renewed interest in providing FAE.

RTV for injection ports is pretty slick. I tried Tyvek for filters all season, but in the end I went back to polyfil in my lids.

Edit- also, we've all sort of reevaluated PF tek. It's a fast easy way to test a new strain or isolate. Handy for other uses too.
No substitute for bulk methods, but  it's a technique well worth knowing and mastering.

VERY relevant.
Thanks.
More posts like this please.
That's some good info right there.
I'll be doing some searches as topics come up.
Don't worry mods. I wont just sit in my own thread all week asking questions.

If you are going to ask questions- do it all in one thread.

Take some time to watch Roger Rabbit's videos. Most of us use most of that info one way or another, even if we don't do it all exactly like he does.

You make it all possible. Doesn't it feel good?
