Faster doesn't always equal better. Truffles come from cooler regions, as do the best wines.

True. And even though Mexico is tropical, it's still cooler underground.
Maybe they want to be cooler than room temp?!?!

Yeah. Ever seen the temp reports from Mexico city? People think it's hot, but It's at a high altitude and about 70 year round. I can't remember the name of the guy in Mexico who isolated "A" and Jalisco, but he's big in the ID forum where he has a thread where he shows the regions he found these races. It's volcanic highlands and I bet NOT hot. Beautiful shots and worth checking out.

Just remembered, Jalisco is an inland Mexican state.

Hm well it was an interesting thought anyway. I'd still like to see someone do experiments with this idea, just for shits and giggles.

Perhaps a setup with all the stone strains. Test growing at 65, 75, and 85 degrees. Eliminate all variables possible and see what changes. Colonization speed, stone size, total stone weight (wet and dry). All those sorts of things. And of course we could subjectively test potency.

I wish I could do it, but sadly I cannot right now. Maybe one day.

higher elevation = thin air = less oxygen

wouldnt that help with trying to get fruits (for printing) instead of stones?

so when you colonize a substrate and put it into fruiting conditions...  how would you keep O2 levels low just restrict FAE?  like fruiting in cooler temps with gas exchange only....

just thinking out loud here.:stoned:

In that case maybe someone with the necessary equipment could create a low pressure low oxygen environment to see if that effects the growth....

 Or grow at 6500 feet for the controls, and then use hyperbaric oxygen for the experiments.

i live at 8k feet. im willing to do what i can... of course for a control i would have to grow elsewhere which wont happen....

did any one look at the papers i posted? they have fantastic stuff in them. p mexicana or p. gal is not mentioned but it does generalize sclerotia in a paper or two.

Not sure about elevation relative to mex. city. The city is uniquely high, nonetheless, it looks like the type of region with cool nights that I've seen in the tropics, I'd guess 2500-3500ft. I tend to doubt that oxygen levels would be much of a factor, esp. for sclerotia. I wish I could provide a link, but mexicana searches in the ID forum should be fruitful. Some of the threads went back to the early 2000s.

Mexico city is 7,217 feet above city level (minimum) at which the air pressure is 160 mb. Another elevation is 12,965 feet above sea level. This time of year it is mid 50s low at night, mid 70s high during the day.

I might be able to do an outdoor patch during some parts of the year!
How can I humidify it? Plastic sheet over it until it pins?

Really? That high, huh? I don't think the summer temps are that much different. The climate would be amazing were it not for the smog.  As far a Jalisco, then, I don't know, maybe 5000ft? I don't recall.

Colima Volcano in Jalisco, Mexico is at an elevation of 13,448 feet. Google people google  So I would say that as a max elevation and maybe 5k less, 8,000 feet, as a minimum.

Jalisco wouldn't germinate at temps ranging from 55-65.  Noticeable colonization happened only when temperatures were raised to 65-70.  I don't know if this helps :justdontknow:

Reviving this thread because I have relevant new info to share. Sorry if this breaks any rules, I'm still a newbie here!

The so-called "Truffle Brothers" (biggest truffle producer in NL) use temperatures of 28°C (82.5°F) for their incubating room to accelerate colonization. They then move the bags to their Nursery room, which is kept in total darkness.

I hope some of this is helpful to anyone looking for info on this subject.

Also, they strictly use rye grass seed inoculated with liquid culture. That isn't the most popular choice for growing sclerotia from what I've seen on this cultivation forum; but I'm assuming they know what they're doing since they're dominating the market right now.

Mush Luv!

large grain bags inoculated with LI, let colonize and sclerocia start to form.  give it time (it varies) and harvest the stones.
