How to go on tour (following a band)
    #11329252 - 10/27/09 01:09 AM (14 years, 5 months ago)

I just don't get how people with no money can go on tour and follow a band back and forth across America for years on end without a house or car or anything basically. It's mind blowing and fascinating to me and I wish somebody would make a good movie about it, or write a book or something. Has anyone done this or know somebody who has? I'm really interested in a detailed description, not just "sold drugs". Maybe some stories from the road too... This should be a fun thread for all..

man many ways, sell drugs , sell hippie stuff like hemp and T shirts, beer, water. you aint gettin very far without some money to move around with. Hitchin is prolly the cheapest,  but its more lonely and dangerous it seems like.

Find friends, split gas costs.
Don't actually pay for shows.
No apartment means no rent. Or at the least a shitty apartment for a portion of the year means cheap rent.
Sell shit. Drugs most likely unless you have some other craft. If you're touring you make friends with other lot rats and get connections for shit to peddle, couches to crash on, "friends" to help you out if it won't come as too great a cost to them.

I've always imagined it isn't too difficult, but it never seems much fun and isn't for me.

I've wondered about these people too. It's pretty fucking fascinating.
Heard about people that just go from festival to festival around the country and just live, it almost doesn't make sense how they can get by like that.
Part of me wants to live that lifestyle, at least for a little while..

This is true rich kids do make up the majority.  But if you are a natural born hustler, making money on tour ain't no thang but a chicken wing.

There are a lot of things to do to make money on the road.  We used to follow the GD and made money by selling grilled cheeses, beer, juice and other legal things.  My wife made a lot selling really nice beadwork.

There's an indie flick called Tie-Dyed about Deadheads made in the early 90s while Jerry was still alive.  They followed a West Coast tour.  It was really good and can give you some insight into what you are wondering.  It is hard to find, but sometimes Sundance shows it.

There's nothing like the freedom that lifestyle brings you, but it's hard, very hard, to make it.

Lost of the shady people get their money to 'tour' by selling fake acid.

A sheet of blank paper can make you a couple thousand dollars...

I have a friend who can go up to her parents, ask for money, and gets handed a credit card with (seemingly) no limit. She's 17, never worked a day in her life. Fucking pathetic@!
(but its nice to get free things from her?

I guarantee thats how LOTS of festival kids get money to get from festie to festie. Once they run out of cash, they just cut up some paper squares and walk around saying "Doses".

It seems like I get offered more fake acid than real shit.(You can sense when they have fake shit) But I never buy any anyways, I just bring my own.

sorry guy, you have no idea what you are talking about.

trusties make up a good percentage of people doing 3 show runs here and there, balling in fancy hotel suites, etc, but actual tour kids tend to have little-to-no family support.

to the OP - the only way i've ever been able to do tour is by having family (not blood, obviously) help. whether this means working somebodies vending booth, being cuffed other things to vend, or whatever - it's really, really hard to do tour without having a social network to help you when you're broke & stranded somewhere.

legitimate vending (selling beer & water, making food, etc) is def possible, esp if you have a crew of people to split costs and work.

Even if you didn't want to vend, If you just saved a $1000 and hitch hiked around and hoped for the best when it came to getting kicked down tickets - it'd probably work out, unless you had an expensive drug habit, i guess.

It's pretty cheap to travel if you do it right, and people at festivals are always willing to help out folks on the road, in my experience.

Selling drugs is common from the traveling festival people i've met, but i've only really been to a few jam shows, so i probably don't really know what i am talking about.

Yeah, lots of people hitch-hike.

As I was leaving Rothbury this year I saw a bunch of people with their hitch-hiking signs trying to catch a ride. Some trying to get as far as Colorado... I could never do that my self.
