orange cap - edible??
    #11328385 - 10/27/09 12:38 AM (8 years, 8 months ago)

Habitat:
Looks like area recently rezoned from agricultural to residential; Georgia oak/pine.  These found solitary under a tall pine, half buried in needles.

Gills:
Off-white, not attached

Stem:
off white, 1 3/4" x 3/8" thick, whiter at the top, either dirty or else porting slight orange/yellow tinges for the bottom half. Stuffed.  White inside.  I don't see any obvious sign of rings or veils.

Cap:
young, smooth, approx 1", surface skin is orange with some yellow to it, flesh is white.  Texture resembles regular grocery mushrooms.  Chewed morsel has a rubbery mushroomy texture. Taste is very mild, not like mushroom, more like watered-down nutty flavor.  Not something you really want to spit out - it's good.

Spore print color:
Unfortunately, i'm not getting any  :frown:  Too young i guess  :frown:  But this looks like it should be common and readily identifiable anyway?

Bruising:
Eventually browns, as an apple.

I'm sure this must be edible - i'd be surprised if not, but I'm not coming across much that matches it, and don't have the advantage of spore color or aged specimens.

Does anybody recognize?  Thanks -

That is a really cool color for a Russula.

Chances are its edible.

With Russula, if its not staining black where damaged and doesn't have a peppery taste, its ok to eat.

Oh, ok, maybe it's the Great Pumpkin Russula.  I see Mr. Mushrooms found something orangey last year, being in the top five google hits for orange russula, but his pictures are missing -

maybe might rise again??

Edit: nevermind the query below, i looked it up, orange is normal - if I don't come back, it was the pumpkin russula...Edit2: ha ha the stem does snap like chalk! Edit3: also the peel peeled about 1/4 to 1/3 before giving out in this youngish specimen

It turns out this did give a print overnight - peachy, like pale yellowish orange - is it still likely ok to eat?  I've been nibbling at its edges.  Very mild subtle flavor, like almond.  I want to eat the whole thing.
