bridgesii rot? help?
    #11327694 - 10/26/09 10:58 PM (8 years, 28 days ago)

I ordered this from a reputable vendor, and this is what I've noticed in the past two days (pics are consecutive).  The growth is hard.  I've read it could be weeping black rot caused from damp soil, but it's a cutting and hasn't been planted.  Other causes?  Sent with knowledge of rot?  Wrong disease?  Should I ask for a replacement, or is this thing benign?

The growing tip is probably ruined and if that is how it arrived I would be asking for a replacement.

If it was from a reputable vender it shouldn't be a problem.

That is exactly how my Bridgesii's came recently, and I'm pretty sure we bought from the same place.... They're fine, trust me... It almmost looks like they got a sunburn already or something... Mine have been planted though and they seem to be fine...

That would be bad if there is a vendor that consistently sells bridgesii that look like that.

Are they a sponser here?

Yes.... BBB... Mine didn't look nearly that bad though. I ordered 10 of them and only a few of them had small spots like that....

bridgesii commonly get black spots, that is just bridgesii...  the tip looks pretty bad for being sold, but its nothing that will kill your plant, just have a scar.  hopefully it keeps growing through it and the growth point isnt actually buggered.

i wouldn't worry though, most rot like that on bridg is just cosmetic, ti rarely spreads and causes real harm.

Is it sad that I already knew where it came from before reading this? BBB has a reputation for sending beaten and rotting cacti. I got a bridgesii with rot and about a dozen spines that weren't even from a bridges impaling it. Fortunately, they're usually pretty friendly and willing to send you another free of charge.

Yeah, bridgesiis tend to get these spots a lot. Out of the 2 I got by mail they all had some. One had a bunch at the base and the other had its growing tip covered in black spot. But they both fought it back and they look great now!

I have some bad experience with BBB, and not even with cacti. The replacement they said they would send never came.

I called em on it and they backed out of their word. It's in the past, but I don't order from them needless to say....

Yeah, it was from BBB.  I emailed them about it and was sent another one without any hassle.  The hard growth doesn't seem to be spreading, so I've dropped my negativity towards it...niiice cactus. :crazy2: Thanks for the help. I did amputate an inch from the bottom 2 nights ago after seeing some squishy rot.  It's been in front of a fan ever since.  I'm hoping keeping the wound pretty dry will lessen chance of infection.  This is my first grow, so every move will be a bit uneasy for a while.

good move. wait until its completely dry and callused over before putting it in some dirt, and wait until it sprouts some decent roots before watering it. If the damage isn't spreading, leave the hard tissue as it is. It's most likely due to stress to the vascular system. The growth tip is probably shot, but it will still produce pups. Welcome to the hobby, and good luck.

More than likely the growing tip is fine, once that thing starts growing again those scars will gradually move down the sides of the cactus and be no more than small scars.
