Name this philosopher
    #11327247 - 10/26/09 08:05 PM (14 years, 5 months ago)

So I was watching the history channel like 6 months ago and it was talking about some philosopher... He taught doing almost nothing was the best way to achieve happiness.  After some time, a Greek/Roman (not really sure... assuming Greek) leader found him.  Being impressed by the man, the leader offered him anything he wanted.  The man replied, "Step aside, you're blocking the light."

Anyone know the name of this guy?  Sadly, this is all I know about him and google has been unhelpful.

Doing nothing??

So sitting in a chair and staring at a wall will make you happy?

Yeah, that was supposedly it exactly.  The idea was to not go after any sort of wealth what-so-ever and just chill.  Now that i'm talking about it, kind of like lots of other cats. :justdontknow:

Then really what he means is to rid yourself of all Earthly desires so that you don't even want to be happy....

All good Gurus will tell you to get rid of your material wealth - and hell, they might as well take that heavy burden off of your hands.

No... I don't think he was going for some buddha thing.  His philosophy seemed to promote giving up any sort of ambitions FOR being happy.  The object of happiness seemed to be the end.

I am not really interested in his philosophy.  I just want some more information on this alleged conversation between him and the Greek/Roman leader.

I believe so.  I want to say he was diogenes ... but not really sure.  Might be getting that mixed up with the band diocious.  Lol

Diogenes was also famous for publicly masturbating in the Agora, as a way to show his contempt for public opinion.  Afterwords, he said to a shocked crowd: "If only I could soothe my hunger by rubbing my belly."
