Meditation, where to start?
    #11327263 - 10/26/09 10:07 PM (8 years, 9 months ago)

Not quite sure if this is the best place to post this, if not feel free to move it!

Anyways, I've been looking into meditation for a while now, since it seems like a good option to improve myself and help with my over-thinking head (I tend to over-think way too much about everything at times...).

Looking into it, it seems like there's a rather broad choice of styles and methods, so i'm asking any experienced meditators, where should i start?

I personally like meditations where I have a focal point. Orin and Dabens books are the shit. And they have a lot of topics.
Also you could try grounding(energetically connecting with mother earth), sourcing(energetically connecting with the source of all energy).
5 basic steps you can do are
1) set intention( your intention defines were you go in life and in meditation, so make it a good one) For most meditation it would be to be still/calm/quiet/relaxed. In all areas of your being.

2) Focus on relaxing as much as possible. Remember breathing, it can calm everything down. Start with your body and do a check. Check on your feet, see if they are relaxed. and relax them even more. Then go to your ankles and check, etc....

3)Release conscious thought, so stop thinking about your day and be thinking more about what you are sensing. Acutally don't think at all just BE here and now. This is the step that messes me up most. I find... Thinking from my center, rather then my head the best way to accomplish this.

4) Allow yourself to be without thought and to be still and to go wherever you are gonna go.

5)Let go of self judgment. Don't stress about whether or not your doing it right cause that'll keep you from doing it right. Just go with the flow.

Be creative with your meditations and let yourself make shit up. For relaxing you could be floating on clouds or dismembering little bunnies. I dunno whatever floats your boat.
Most importantly have fun.

Download the book Mindfulness in Plain English.

Start by just focusing on ur breath; this is called Samatha. As u progress incorporating Vipassana can be of much use.

I've learned recently that counting in your head helps me get into the 'meditation' mood.

Breath in.... count at least to 5.... then exhale... count at least to 5. But this is subject to personal preference. I have anxiety, so it's hard to me to just jump into the fray without doing so. Also, I focus on exploring my inner self, ask my self where I want to go - and enjoy the ride.

Has anyone else felt like this?

I'm also a novice to meditation, but I have found it to be therapeutic and utilitarian like to implement on crashes from rolls, or stimulants. I will start with either a mantra either internally or softly spoken, and my mind will then begin to relax and enter the right state of mind for meditation.

It has been a great help during everyday life as well, you can use it to eliminate negative thought process and I find it to be quite beneficial to integrate particularly into comedowns off harder drugs. Good luck.

I have talked a lot about meditation so I decided to share my form of meditation.
It is an unconventional meditation, but it works well for me.

I started reading about "how to meditate" and, for the most part, it just takes finding a comfortable position and focusing your attention on breathing.

When I first started meditating I was doing a VERY physical job. Every day I would come home sore and stiff. Soaking in a hot bath weekly was necessary, so I decided to incorporate meditating into my weekly soaks.

First I light some scented candles in the bathroom, and put my stereo player in the room ,near the tub with some easy music. (Pink Floyd or Pure Moods....anything that is nice and mellow)

Then, I run a tub half full with warm water. Get in and finish filling the tub w/hot water.

Once the tub is full I turn off the water and begin my meditation.

It is simple. So simple it is almost hard to do.

Just focus on getting the most out of each breath.
Not taking super deep breaths, not trying to breath
just allowing your lungs to "do their thing" letting them
take in as much or as little air as they want.

After a while I will begin to yawn, just let it happen.

When I feel the time is right I slowly sink from a seated position to a laying position.

This takes time, don't rush it.
Slowly let your body sink into the hot water.
Don't go from seated to laying in one step.
Go from a seated to a semi-seated/laying position.
Stay there for a few breaths, then ease your way down, lower in the tub.
Gradually let yourself sink into the water, pausing at each position
until your legs are resting on the sides of the tub and your torso
is completely submerged in the water. Even your ears.
The only thing that is out of the water is your face and legs.
You're basically floating in the tub now.

Continue to focus on your breathing.

Any random thoughts that come up...just acknowledge them, let them pass, and continue to focus on your breath.

I can achieve a very deep state of meditation with this method.

The main thing about meditation is to understand the basics and then find your own path.

This form of meditation is not found in any book that I am aware of
it's just something I put together that works for me

My Meditation

Live for the moment you are in now
Don't be bogged down by your past
Don't be afraid of what lies in your future
