Persian Whites?
    #11323998 - 10/26/09 12:16 PM (14 years, 5 months ago)

So a friend thru down 2-3 seed packs of Persian Whites in his back yard from BBB. A week or two after he planted the seeds these popped out he weeded out what he knew was weeds and lets these grow spacing them out and watering them. It's been over a month now mabey even two. And he'd like to make sure he isn't raising weeds. He's almost 80% sure. But needs some opinions seeing as they look slightly thinner then others.

Look like poppies to me, although I'm not expert on these.

Those don't look like papaver somniferum to me, maybe some of the smaller ones do, but you have a lot of weeds in there methinks.

The 3 dudes with the round leaves in the first picture look like poppy-ish to me... but the things that are growing in the last picture are definitely not poppies. XD.

Probably your friend got last year's seed batch so they had poor viability.  Looks like there were weeds in his soil somehow and he proceeded to weed out the wrong plants.  That or they just straight sent him bunk seeds/weed-contaminated seeds.

They don't look very poppy-ish to me either.

This is what they should look like after about two months.

Anyone know how often poppies need to be fertilized during young growth?

IMHO, poppy seedlings are very tender and look like small, oblong lettuce leaves.

I believe that poppy leaves either have smooth edges, or they look like karode13's.

I have never once received viable poppy seeds, from any ethno supplier or trader. I've tried different seasons, hours of daylight, growing mediums, etc.

Small pinches from different sacks of bread seed, some frozen for many years, have all grown reliably. They tolerate transplanting and self seed.
