    #11325756 - 10/26/09 06:47 PM (7 years, 11 months ago)

Hey all, been a very long time since i came on here but I'm not sure where to post this question or not, but i found this weird stuff growing outside along side thousands of other mushrooms i have growing wild out here i don't know about , but these things are weird looking man there like alien but the name is Monotropa or Indian Pipe. I read up and said i need to use the root, so i uprooted alot of them to start drying but I'm just wondering if anyone else has come across this shit, they said its like a substitute for opium i dunno but just wanna know what to do with it when its dry thanks :P

Indian pipes, IMO, are some of the most interesting plants.

But never heard of them as an opium sub.

Did you read that online or just hear about it?

"Indian pipe, like its relative pinesap, has no chlorophyll, so it cannot obtain energy from sunlight. Instead, it gets nutrients from organic matter in the soil."

Interesting... I was just reading about this... I guess it is a plant that cannot conduct photosynthesis, so it obtains literally ALL of its energy from its soil.... Incredible...

Not exactly from the soil. They get it from parasitic relationship with other trees and fungi.

They are fascinating and very unique.

http://www.rook.org/earl/bwca/nature/herbs/monotropa.html here is a website with a picture they look exactly like the ones i have in my yard, i got tons of them and there suppose to be really really rare to find i dunno, all the stuff i have on it i read in the internet, but they said it was used widely in medicine up until the 20Th century so its gotta be something. To do alittle test i just chopped up one root and put it in with my spaghetti lol i know its stupid but it was just calling my name out to eat it lol. It has no taste , feels like a Water-Chestnut anyways later :P any info would be great if anyone knows.

it taps into roots of spruce trees i believe, does not get just from soil like most mushrooms.

Indian pipes definitely aren't rare around me, they're everywhere in the woods.  When I was younger I thought it was a fungus till I looked it up.  A very unusual plant indeed.

Monotropa have an interesting relationship with trees and mycorhizzal fungus.  I have a book on mycorhizzae which has a whole chapter on them.  They get their energy by essentially parasitizing the fungus (more often than not russulas), and indirectly the mycorhizzae's host tree.  Of course... these interactions are all pretty poorly understood, and it is difficult to differentiate what is parasitism, mutualism, or commensalism, even with the relationship between plants and mycorhizzae.

But, pretty interesting a plant that takes advantage of a fungus. Seems like a real role reversal, though orchids apparently parasitize their mycorhizzal partners as well. Nature tends to be a lot more complex than we'd like it to be.

Never heard anything about Indian Pipes being at all psychoactive.  They are beautiful to stumble across though.

IMO the most interesting part is that some of the nutrients that they receive from the fungi are completely unchanged or needed by the fungi.
They somehow "convince" the fungi to take it from the plant.

Truly unique
