Botany Plant Family Project: Cactaceae, Cactus Family - Suggestions?
    #11324953 - 10/26/09 02:36 PM (14 years, 5 months ago)

Hey guys... We're doing different projects on plant families in my botany class and I was wondering if you guys have any interesting input as to what to include in this presentation. It has to be 15-20 minutes long, so I'm going to be able to talk about quite a bit... I was already planning on covering Lophophora Williamsii and the whole Peyote religion and everything... And of course cover the fact that the Trichocereus species also contains moderate amounts of mescaline as well... etc.... Anything else interesting about ANY other Cacti that I should include?

I would recommend not having the main focus of your presentation be mescaline.

Actually, it was already approved by the teacher.... Smart ass.... Very constructive... lol.... Anyway, it's not JUST about mescaline. I want to center in on the Peyote religion and all of the different cacti that actually contain mescaline, but as I said above.... I have 15-20 minutes to speak, so I'm going to need to cover much more than just that.... Which is where asking for suggestions comes in... Anyone have anything constructive?

San Pedro also has religious use in the Andes, you seem to be missing that.

I was trying to be constructive. I was saying it would be better to focus more on the classification and physical properties
than the physiological aspect. I would include that, just not be the main focus.

That what my botany presentations have all been.

edit..  And I assumed that because all you talked about in your post was mescaline.

I'm aware of this... What about my post made you believe that I was "missing" that exactly? All I mentioned was that it contains mescaline... I will be centering in on ALL (or as many as I can cover) religions that use cacti as a sacrament...

I just mentioned it because you mentioned the religious use of peyote and not the religious use of trichocereus, I thought maybe you were missing something.

I believe you should study how the native americans discovered the Peyote, and how life has changed for them after that.

Good suggestion... I don't think I've ever read about how they initially discovered it myself.

As long as your talking about them cover cacti's use as food, antiseptic, hygiene, and many other uses in cultures.

Book Suggestion: People of the Peyote.

i think 20 mins will go so fast you wont need any other topics of cacti....people could talk about this one topic (peyote and religion) for hours on end without stopping lol.
