Why is self-esteem so hard to build?
    #11325407 - 10/26/09 03:50 PM (14 years, 5 months ago)

Why is it easier for people to feel like they aren't good enough or don't deserve someone/something rather than having an optimistic attitude towards these issues?
Why is it easier to say "I'm not, I can't" instead of "I am, I can"

I think that's true for some people but not all.

Anyway, it's a damn good question.
I can only imagine that it has something to do with how people are raised, but that's not much of an explanation.

IMO this is because self esteem is a flawed idea to begin with, and so is the feeling of worthlessness. Both of them demand lots of self-explanatory work, even though the first also asks for action (you only have self esteem if it is fueled by continuous evidence that affirms your value). The reason why it is "easier" for one to deem oneself as worthless is because one doesn't have to do anything and not doing anything means no notable failure.

I think that those who have a natural tendency to simply accept themselves and enjoy the ride have much better chances to feel happy and connect with other people.

Imagine if self esteem could be attained by doing nothing!

what would be the point of it?

Self esteem is an indication of whether the self is 'right' or not. If it is not right then there is reason to improve, to become better.

Self esteem isnt that hard to build for everyone...
but that is a totally different question to asking why it is easier to have low self esteem than high self esteem... no matter what, it is easier to have low self esteem because low self esteem is default - if you havnt done anything then you don't deserve anything

unless you have been taught concepts such as 'everyone is special' or 'god loves everyone' and in this case, you may manage to gain self esteem from simply existing. however, this is likely to wear down on your judgement if you think about things for a long period of time, because it will become clear to you that the fact that you exist is a trait that you share with everyone, even the people who you think are unworthy of esteem. Thus, you will sink back to lower esteem.

Self esteem is like a compas... it tells you where you are in relation to your values.
Thus, it is hard to gain self esteem for the very fact that you VALUE traits that are not easy to attain...

We are taught differently from a very young age. This lays down powerful programs that are difficult to overcome.

like Terrence Mckenna said in that Ram Dass interview...

"I really see the psychedelics as directly intervening in the core process which is running us over the edge- which is our inability to emotionally connect with the consequences of what we're doing If for a single moment we could feel what we're doing.. we would stop."

because we do stupid shit - because of our inability to emotionally connect with the consequences of what we're doing - we don't like ourselves. none of us are actually living to our full potential.. the only way we would come close to it looks something like us being in an enlightened psychedelic mode all the time. therefore we see how far we've fallen, how irresponsible we are... but we don't know how to exactly fix us. we can't see the solution because we can't clearly see the problem, in times of low self-esteem...

Because its not supposed to be built.
Its already there.
You just need to make the opposite building crumble to the ground.
