Personalism?
    #11325167 -

I just had a warning for a personalism, im not disputing it at all, i well deserved it & its nice to know there is an active mod here...

I just wanted to clarify what distinguishes a personalism?

Isn't saying someones beleifs are stupid, just as much a personalism as saying they themselves are stupid?

And its okay for one person to call a certain group of beleifs stupid, but when you challenge that persons beleifs, its suddenly offensive?

Whats the difference?

:peace:

EDIT: the point of this post is NOT to say that posts should not be mocked or challenged (there are other forums obviously)
the point is that the ones who challenge beleifs should be willing to be challenged themselves in the same manner, otherwise its pointless making challenging threads in the first place

i think we should allow all personalisms

we will all be better off for it

Yes but thats irrelevant...

Perhaps when singling particular people out then it becomes personal

I just find it funny that its okay to say an entire group of people are stupid, but call a particular one person stupid & suddenly its wrong...

Even the 'debunkers' could agree with that...

I guess its like any human being can admit humanity as a whole is ignorant, but they cant admit that they themselves are ignorant!

this "rule" reminds me of my old boss. he would let certain people get away with being complete assholes, but when someone else said something a little bit out of line.. slap!

but yeah it definitely is favoritism (mixed in with a bit of high school drama).

It is hypocritical to allow me to be mocked indirectly by being a member of a certain group, yet get all upset about something less offensive.

a person is nothing more than an idea
if you clear your mind of every single idea, thought, beleif, all imagnation swept aside
there is no 'person' left to speak of
theres a body, but not a 'personal' person

I fully deserved the warning (according to the forum rules)

However i do think its ridiculous that some can galvant around the forum making post after post after post after post, berating other peoples beleifs, but when that persons beleifs are challeneged, suddenly its not okay...

If you are willing to challenge peoples beleifs then your beleifs should be able to withstand a similar challenge...

The rules state long time forum regulars generally get more leniency than noobs.
There are regulars in this forum who've been here less time than you but get away with much more blatant personalisms than the one you used (and many a times).
Do you still think yours was deserved?

Nothing like exposure

Ive had a good run...

Its just hilarious how certain people can masquerade as 'intelligent' yet be completely ignorant to their own true nature

They make threads about the same thing over & over, dont even discuss the subject matter in the thread, then make another thread in the same vein, again & again it repeats...

What use in making the thread if they are not willing to honestly discuss the matter the first time round?

The people here who i have had most intelligent discussion with are not spiritualist beleivers nor materialist non-beleivers, but people like icelander, who are skeptical, yet they are also wise enough to know that something more is going on, so are actually willing to hear you out & have an intellectual discussion/debate, rather than calling people 'retarded' and not actually discussing or debating anything

anyhow it's not really about what is believed in.  even the so called believers are discussing their personal philosophies, so they are entitled to have a go at moderating IMO.  the only mods in place now are bunkers, so naturally they will favor others like them.  it would only be balance to have a mod who is not of this bunk mentality.

i cant see her giving out warnings in favoritist defense of closed minded clowns who go around calling people retarded
she even gave Icelander warnings & they're friends outside of the shroomery

stupid .. very simple example.

You say : Buddha is the path to enlightenment.

I say : You're an idiot.

thats a personalism.

what i can do is say : thats a pretty idiotic thing to say.

I think.. the whole point of avoiding personalisms is so that we focus on whats being discussed and not on a particular person.

Just like with jesus..
dont praise him , try to understand his message.

I felt the same way you do.. but after looking more closely i realized that its actually a good thing.

If i present a topic about being vegetarian and you come in to bash on it...
it would completely detrimental to the discussion if i said that you're only saying that because your fat in real life.
although it might be true... it defeats the purpose of debate which is discussing ideas, not the people which bring them forth.

and no.. i dont think challenging someones beliefs is the same as bashing on them personally.
my beliefs have changed so drastically and continue shifting on a regular basis..
challenging or even insulting them does no harm.
on the other hand.. if you manage to push one of my buttons by getting personal with me.. i might just act on my ego , get upset and talk back in the same manner.

THAT .. is something that is being avoided with the personalism rule.

On the other hand.. some people are very skilled at getting their message across without breaking the rules.
This is where the situation has no other course but to be left at the mods discretion , and as far as i can tell  , this is also being avoided.

Without rules.. we turn into a stupid mob of people arguing with each other and building up our egos without ever honestly discussing the ideas at hand.

But even with the rules , we find something that we dont like.

I think.. that we just naturally don't appreciate rules and i think  its good that we don't.

But.. theres a lot of RETARDED people out there.. and we just have to make some , so they dont run around making everything retarded

I play this video game every now and then.
There are actually people.. that come on to the server.. just to fuck with people.
they turn on a cheat and kill everybody in 10 seconds.
or they come on your team.. and throw bombs to blind the entire team.
They dont come to play.. they dont even know how to play good.
They literally waste their time.. to make our time miserable.

and you just gotta ban the dumb motherfuckers...
no time for understanding - we got a game to play

In a debate, you argue ideas. Which is why it makes no sense to attack a person's character. They are separate.

A person's beliefs may make up their identity but it is not who they are.

Only if you are attached to your words. If you think you are what you say then you take it personal when someone says your post is dumb.

I actually agree there is no difference for the most part. But it's a nice loophole to take advantage of when you're in the mood. Only an asshole wouldn't

I think the difference is in regards to whether the reply is making at least some small attempt to be productive, and not simply to cause harm. If I say your ideas are stupid, it indicates those ideas could be improved on. If I say your ideas indicate you are stupid, it indicates you can do no better, which generally leads to unproductive exchanges. Without that rule, this forum would basically be OTD.
