monotubs, FAE and wax paper question
    #11324946 - 10/26/09 04:36 PM (7 years, 11 months ago)

this is my first monotub grow that i used wrinkled wax paper on top of the substrate since im not confident enough for casing layers.. im using 18 gallon monotubs, i was wondering if since i was using the waxpaper to hold the moisture on top of the substrate, should i remove the polyfill from my holes to allow for more FAE? ill be replacing the waxpaper every 2 to 3 days.
thanks for any help, you guys rock!

I'm doing a mono-tub now as well... I'm debating whether or not to do a casing layer to hold the moisture in; I do want to keep moisture levels up, but with my knowledge of microbiology (as well as keeping several food gardens over the years) that even non-nutritious or less nutritious soils like Peat Moss with acid control (Lime/Calcium carbonate) and desired PH levels, you can still be at considerable risk for trichoderma at high moisture levels with house-hold air.

I don't know much about different methods... Wax paper seems a mite counter-productive as it would certainly keep moisture levels up, but it seems it would highly decrease breathe-ability.

Let me know if I'm wrong about the wax paper thing, because if it works in stead of a casing layer, I'd be willing to try it.

Here's my understanding, and hopefully more seasoned growers can confirm or deny this. The crinkled wax paper's job is primarily to prevent the substrate from losing moisture during colonization, but also allow the mycelium some oxygen. I don't believe that the substrate needs a lot of fresh air during colonization, and the wax paper should work fine. As long as there's not a seal that really suffocates the mycelium, which leads to the colonization stalling and cobweb mold.

So basically, no you don't need to take the polyfill out and you probably shouldn't because it will keep the tub nice and clean of mold spores and whatever else is floating around. If the polyfil allows enough fresh air for the mushrooms, then it should be fine for the mycelium. The mushrooms are what really require a lot of fresh air.

I've never used waxpaper, just tinfoil with holes in it, but I think I will switch to it. I think you'll be fine with the polyfill holes, just don't make a seal on the myc- you don't need to seal off the edges where the paper meets the substrate, just lay it on there.

Wow I wrote too much for a simple answer, I just drank waaay too much coffee. Good luck.

on topf of my subs during colonisation there is always perforated tinfoil, air exchange, moisture preservation.
