too many holes in my fc?
    #11324234 - 10/26/09 02:51 PM (7 years, 11 months ago)

I'm following the pf tek and I put six cakes in my fc about a week ago.  So far there's been no pinning, and I think there is low humidity in the chamber because no water is condensing on the sides or the lid.

I put about 40 1/4" holes on each side of the fc. Is that too many?

The chamber is just a plastic bin, about 18" by 14" by 12", with a few inches of wet perlite at the bottom.

You want a hole every two inches all the way around on all six sides. I use a tape measure and a marker to plot it all out before drilling, makes the whole process a lot simpler.
How are you measuring humidity other than by condensation? Because that's not a good indicator.
How often do you mist? Fan? What are temps like?

Pics?

As requested:

Condensation on the sides of the FC do not have a relationship to humidity at all. Condensation indicates a temperature differential.

You need to get Ythan to build you some custom text macros. Like a graemlin, but it turns into a quote of your words.
So you could type :condensation: or :gypsum: or :china: and get the appropriate paragraphs.

Sorry, Mr. Rabbit; I bet you hate noobs with a fiery passion. But we really appreciate your help.  There's so much info on the site that sometimes it's hard to find stuff even with the search function.  Plus it's always tempting to post your question so you can get more specific answers.

Doc T: I mist/fan twice a day; it's just room temp about 68 degrees. I don't have a hygrometer but I will get one. Here are some pics...

that seems fine when you get the hydromiter if the RH is to low tappe a few holes up

You need to get it up off the floor for two reasons.  First is that air is supposed to enter from the bottom, and pass through the perlite to the top, thus collecting moisture.  A shotgun terrarium should always be elevated on jars, cans, bricks, etc., so that air can circulate and enter/exit from all six sides.  The second reason for getting it up is that over 90% of the contaminant spores in a room are hovering within 1 foot of the floor.  You should move the terrarium to a desk or table, and then elevate it above that.

I've never seen condensation in a shotgun terrarium.  The holes provide enough air exchange that the temperature remains near equal on each side.

hygrometer update: I found some thermometer/hygrometers on ebay for $4, shipping included.  Of course, it ships from Hong Kong which takes two weeks.

Small but real chance that a $4 hygrometer from Hong Kong is usable for mycology.
More likely not.

I've bought cheap shit from Hong Kong that works fine, like SD memory cards and a battery recharger.  It's not like a hygrometer is a complicated piece of machinery.

I guess the question is, how much precision is required?  This $4 is hardly precise- RH accuracy is listed as within 5% when humidity is between 40 and 75, otherwise within 7%.  But it should at least show me if my humidity is in the right range, right?
