Presto vs All-American
    #11323479 - 10/26/09 10:38 AM (14 years, 5 months ago)

I know All-American pressure cookers are the most popular to to use, but have you guys had any experience with the Presto brand pressure cookers? The 23 quart Presto is half the cost of its All-American counterpart. I would rather spend that difference in price on supplies such as agar, petri dishes, etc.

This the pressure cooker I'm considering:

thats the one i use and i love it
i can fit 10 QT jars in there at a time

it does kinda suck if you only need to PC something
small like LC or agar
because it is so big

Half the price for a made in china PC is not a bargain.  You'll spend the other half of the price on gaskets and other parts during the first five years, and you'll still be stuck with a made in china PC.  Pony up the $$ now and have something that will last a lifetime.

All American does seem to be the best of the best, but I've had nothing but success with my (old) presto. Keep in mind I got it on eBay and it is NOT a new one, so maybe the older ones are better? I don't know. It's stainless steel too. Very sturdy. And I cook in it!

that depends on where you buy your AA at...

I got a brand new AA925 still in the box, off the craiglist for $125.00, last year.

I've seen great deals on used AA's on the Craiglist and Ebay.

Several years ago I got a brand new AA930 off Ebay for $200.00 including shipping.

There are good deals out there if you look for them.

noobie and Myco:
Thanks for your Presto info.

Slimz:
Thanks also, but the whole idea of "vintage" to me translates to "old". I always prefer to buy new if possible. Plus I'm looking for one that can house 10 quarts. Those seemed a little small. I will definitely keep searching, though.

RR and Roadkill:
I'm new, but I have been reading and reading here very thoroughly. One thing that I can confidently say is that you two are very respected in the community. I value both your opinions on this matter and I will take your advice with the All-American. I just need to search around for a good deal. Worst case scenario, do you think $199.00 for the AA 921 from Amazon is fair?

I know you were asking RR and Road, but 199.00 is quite good. Free shipping?

$200 for a brand new AA 921 is a great deal.

It should also be noted that 'old' presto and mirro pressure cookers were made in USA and high quality.  It's only within the last ten years they've outsourced production to china and have become crap.

CakeBaker.. i do appreciate your POV as far as vintage = Old

but i must say that the all american uses the same technology as the old ones..

i have 2 vintage cookers

and both work perfectly.

i use them daily

the national can hold 20 PSI

the All American is great, but not much different from many of the older ones. Its just a good name. (like national and burpee)

Yeah, for an AA that's good.
I haven't had anything bad with my Presto, I'm perfectly happy with it- but I'd get the AA at that price.

For $10.00 more should I go for the 925?

Or is that pointless when using quarts?

Also, I would think the All Americans hold a better resale value.
