Large White Mushrooms in Leaf Compost
    #11323198 - 10/26/09 11:26 AM (8 years, 1 month ago)

Habitat:
NE Ohio. Growing in our leaf compost pile of mostly maple leaves. Between a wild cherry and sugar maple tree.

Gills:
White, attached and very close. Descending the stem a bit.

Stem:
1-2" wide, short and squat. Very bulbous base.

Cap:
Up to 8" diameter. Starting convex but becoming flat and wavy with age. Somewhat vase shaped in some. Younger ones are white while mature specimens become almost buff/tan.

Spore print color:
In the process.

Bruising:
Didn't notice any bruising or discharge.

These are all over the edge of the woods by my house where we dump the raked leaves every year. If you disturb the leaves, they are spider webbed full of mycelium. I have a couple educated guesses as to what they are, but haven't pinpointed it yet.

From the pictures, the colour of the mushrooms in the first pics, and the colour of the picked one is different, so it might be different species.

However, they look like Clitocybes. Maybe Clitocybe clavipes.

I guess it is possible that they are different, but they are growing within inches of each other. I thought the darker ones were just more mature. Picture number 6 is the mushroom I picked before I picked it.

I was also guessing some sort of Clitocybe.

Leucopaxillus or Clitocybe, not positive. I found a bunch of these the last two times i went out, just growing on the forest floor in patches here and there. Found one bigger than my head!
