Corelation between agar mycelial growth and robust fruiting...
    #11322651 - 10/26/09 06:01 AM (8 years, 10 months ago)

So is there any way to determine the fruiting characteristics of a strain started on agar from ms based upon visual indicators? Or is the only way to fruit it and see how it does...

I would assume that a perfectly circular, thick and bright isolated colony should fruit well- and that it's speed of colonization in relation to other similar samples should be a good indicator to its fruiting capabilities when compared to said other samples...

But I think I have read conflicting opinions on here over the years, and a recent search failed to locate anything relevant...

So whats the deal with that anyway?

-Thanks

Colonization speed is just one of many factors.
Your winning culture will colonize quickly, but that's just the qualifier- it then needs to fruit well, etc.

Yes but what do you look for to determine which ones will fruit best? If you had 10 petris and you could only fruit one, what would your reason be for choosing the one you did? (Thickness of the mycelial strands, vertical growth, shape, etc...)

-Thanks

Oh, no. If you have ten monocultures in petris, grow out ten tubs and check the results of each.

One way to get a head start is to use a tissue clone instead of spores to start your agar plate. That will reduce the amount of sectoring you have to deal with in order to get the isolated culture you want.

I would prefer to be able to pick the best one and grow all ten tubs from it, lol!

But you're saying that's not possible. That's what I was afraid of...

It's just so frustrating to have to trash a whole tub because it decided to take a shit rather than fruit...

 That's why it's hard. If it was easy, everybody would do it.
But if you start with a tissue clone, you'll likely get results, and then it's just a matter of picking the best from among the great tubs you have, and continuing with that one line of genetic info.
