tiny mono = tiny shrooms?
    #11322568 - 10/26/09 05:16 AM (8 years, 1 month ago)

Hi all,

I am trying Doc_T's iteration of the monotub, and it seems to work great, but… the fruits are sooo small.

Perfectly nice proportions, but small.

They are not ready to pick, but the biggest make 4cm and I don't think they will grow much more before veil's break.

As an inexperienced noob, I wonder if it is a logic consequence of my setup, or if I am doing anything wrong that I could improve for the next time:

- a small transparent box (19x16x25 cm) with 0.5cm holes every 2cm, starting 10cm from the bottom, lid included.

- strain: Matias Romero

- ~0.75 liter of rye, inoculated from LC, then spawned to CCV (~1:4.5)(8cm depth)

- the sub took 8 days to colonize, then 6 days later the first pins arrived. Nice pinset.

- I mist twice a day, fan a little. The sub doesn't seem dry.

So…?

Lack of moisture in the sub? Should I dunk the whole tub before introducing fruiting condition next time?

Genetic?

Thanks for your time and inputs

What was your sub depth? 8cms?  This is probably why your fruits are so small.  IME anything under 4 inches doesnt produce big shrooms.  Yes you should dunk for four hrs before the next flush

I think deeper subs also give a larger pin set under the same conditions, but don't quote me on that, may just be rumor and here-say.

well yes and no dont quote me but im pretty sure this is the way it works.  So much psilocybe is present in the mushroom this never really grows stays the same amount the shroom just gains water weight

It was 10cm-4" when I put the sub in the box, but it might have been too loose-fluffy and then has packed down.

The dunk thing… Does it apply only to small projects? I don't remember reading that in other monotub techniques.

You need to rehydrate the tray cake tub watever before the next flush.  Well you dont have to but you really should for a better flush than a none dunk.  I dont use teks so I cant point you to one that will tell you to dunk but im sure they are out there

Tiny little miniature shrooms are often a sign of a contaminated tub. Ordinary 'small' shrooms may be due to water issues or sometimes FAE.

What? No? No! It seems perfectly healthy…

As I have lots of holes, and I fan, I would bet on the water issue, perhaps due to the small size/mass of sub, unable to provide enough moisture like a big monotub?

Genearly smaller substrates will produyce smaller fruits. Also the more fruits a sub produce, the smaller they can be.

If they are really small, that could be a sign of low moisture content, or saturation of your substrate. If your misting too much and not allowing moisture to evaporate from your substrate (waterlogging it) that can cause the same as lack of moisture

This was my last hpoo mini double tub. 2 3 litre food storage containers stuck together. sub was around 4 inches deep.

I regain confidence as I see your picture, Veda, thanks. It makes my tub not so abnormal.

I'll try to post a pic or two
