whats the chance of real life interplanetary travel?
    #11321465 - 10/25/09 09:51 PM (14 years, 5 months ago)

so Ive been watching alot of stargate sg1 lately, and it got me to thinking about if there was a chance that this was really going on in some form. what if there really doing this? going to other planets, making treaties with alien races, etc etc.

i can understand why they wouldn't want the public to know, because it would result in a breakdown in society among other things. but i cant help but think if it is real, what it would be like and stuff like that.

according to this guy  Andrew basiago, we have traded some of our people in exchange for 12 aliens from a place called zeta reticule or something like that, he res the link to the website http://exopolitics.blogs.com/exopolitics/

what do you all think

NASA is trying to design ion thruster technology, we could get to Mars considerably quickly if it pulls through.

alot quicker than the 6 months using a rocket, but i was thinking more along the lines of something like stargate.

btw heres the link to the report about the aliens exchange

I am gonna say about 0 ~ 0.00000000000001% chance.

I do not think it is possible, at all. Not without killing us.

I was reading this in a book earlier today, actually. Some theoretically stuff about harnessing dark energy to create a 'bubble' that expands faster than light. Wormholes like in Star Gate are theoretically possible, but there's no proof they exist in nature.

Ive read some stuff about using the dark energy to make a bubble, theory. Ive also read something about a theory that says you can use a black hole to go ftl, but you would have to be able to control the black hole.

if using molecular deconstruction yes, but what if some how you survived it. think as a very long distance fax machine

I have a hard time believing 'evidence' from sources like the examiner
it is akin to believing the shit in the National Enquirer

Which would never be possible. Further reading: A Brief History of Time by Stephen hawking and The Black Hole War by Leonard Susskind.

Very, very unlikley.

The trouble with technology like the wormholes from stargate is that if they did exist then causality would be violated.  Its hard to understand, but it is the case.  If we can find a way to travel faster then light then effects can happen before causes (ie, somebody dies from a shot before you shoot the gun, a president gets elected before a vote, a tree grows before its seed is dropped).  This doesn't makes sense, so we assume that we can never travel faster then light (among other reasons).

We could travel sufficiently close to the speed of light where you could visit any planet you want in a short amount of time.  This is completely consistent with the known way that the universe works, but is nearly an engineering impossibility.  The amount of energy needed to be controlled and then put to use practically in a craft would be crazy.  But maybe we could do that, in a few million years of practicing science and engineering we could come up with some cool stuff and make interplanetary travel common place.

No wormholes though.  (or if so, then no cause and effect...)

heres a link talking about the bubble effect in relation to using a warp drive.

http://dsc.discovery.com/news/2008/07/28/warp-speed-engine.html

einstein said that we could go faster than the speed of light, but what if he was wrong. people have been wrong about all kinds of things in the past, ex: the earth being flat, and the earth being the center of the galaxy

the light speed limit is an accepted proof in our current prospect of reality, (macroscopically speaking atleast)
quantum entanglement does pose certain other questions on the concept of the light speed limit but that is not relevant on our scale.

I think we could make it to mars today if we set our minds to it, but is it really worth all the time and money?

Why don't we apply our resources to end hunger and poverty... before we invest billions to step on a dead planet.

Actually it doesnt, interestingly enough.  Its often touted as a violation of relativity but in fact no observation of entanglement and no hypothetical application of it in any way violates the theory of relativity and its speed limit on travel and communication.

i understand that, as there is no measurable "thing" by which a speed can be measured to be breaking the limit in space.

however, i definitely think that the concept has a huge potential to cause a paradigm shift in the way that the universe is viewed as an entity itself, and the means by which we exist within it. since their is really no widely accepted means by which the information between particles is relayed, whether by the "collapse in the probability wave" or otherwise.
it is still a fact that the information is relayed instantaneously but still falls in line with general relativity such as a moving observer seeing one particle being measured before the other etc. but both still take on the same state when measured; velocity, spin, momenta or otherwise

???
