time?
    #11319541 - 10/25/09 06:29 PM (8 years, 1 month ago)

I am using the 18 gallon bin method with compost.. I put the colonized rye grain in about 2 weeks ago.. one of my bins is pretty much covered in white.. how long is it supposed to take for the shrooms to start popping up?

Usually 5-14 days after you put it into fruiting conditions

What do you mean by fruiting conditions? my first grow was the homestead grow kit.. its at room temp with plenty of humidity.. the compost is covered in white mold but no signs of mushrooms  yet.

Fresh air exchange and a light cycle = fruiting condition, while maintaining humidity, after full colonization of the sub

Make sure there is a fan or some form of air movement in the area.. not aimed at it. A light ambient flow, anything aimed at it is going to dry it out.

A week or so is ok to wait.

12 on 12 off with the light, preferably 6500k range. They make use of light and dark cycles, much like in nature.

I don't mean to be an ass but you should probably read up on these things before you dive in headfirst. All this information can be found in numerous threads, teks, and faqs. It's important that you have a thorough knowledge of what you're doing before you start. Otherwise I'm sure you're setting yourself up to fail.

That said, I ask plenty of questions myself so I can't judge

Good luck, I hope you get lots of shrooms!

i did read up but from what i know and watched on the homestead video.. the shrooms need no light, at least thats what they said.. I read up alot but i didnt see anything about the air exchange either.. Just drilling holes so they can get air...
I think my holes may be too small there is water building up at the bottom of the bins.. I opened them for a bit to let some of the moisture out.

Mycelium and sclerotia producing strains do not need light. But when you are fruiting shrooms they do need light, a 12 on 12 off lighting schedule.

no, sometimes shrooms use light as a pin trigger and more importantly to tell them which way is up. ive grown shrooms in complete darkness.

drill centimetre sized holes all around the substrate level about two inches apart for air exchange.

air exchange is the most important pinning trigger.

OP. That means you original poster.
You may want to go to this link and watch the videos. www.mushroomvideos.com
start at the first one and stop when you need to and rewind and watch over and over. apply those principles to your grow.

All mushroom strains produce mycelium, I think you're a bit confused.

Sclerotia producing strains do not require light as long as you're just growing the sclerotia. If you want to fruit them (meaning growing mushrooms themselves) they do require light just like all other strains.

Mycelium does not need light either, as naturally it grows underground. Mycelium (or myc, as it's commonly called on shroom growing forums) is the fungus that essentially forms the root system (for lack of a better comparison) for the mushrooms. The mushrooms are fruit, somewhat equivalent to an apple. Apple trees produce apples, so that when the apple falls off of the tree it then decomposes into the ground and the seeds are exposed to the soil, where they can grow more apple trees. Mushrooms are the fruit of the mushroom fungus. They grow up, open their caps and drop spores (the fungal equivalent to seeds) so that the spores can spread and grow more myc, which will then grow more mushrooms, and the cycle continues.

An important thing to remember is essentially all living things grow primarily to procreate (reproduce). It was only recently that that humans have started to break this cycle. It's almost socially acceptable to live your life without having children, but it is still an odd thing to do. Then again humans are nearly the only species that will continue to reproduce unimpeded beyond the ability of their environment to sustain them. Dooming humanity to eventually snuff itself out by exceeding the earths resources and dying of starvation. *shrugs* What can you do...

I'm sure there are better ways to explain this but it makes sense to me.

The point of all that is that, yes, your little shroomies do need a lighting schedule in order to grow properly. (although, as someone mentioned earlier, there are probably ways to grow them in darkness - but just stick with conventional methods for now).

And yes, some say sclerotia producing strains are substantially easier to grow, as long as you don't want to grow mushrooms themselves. You can trip off sclerotia. You just inoculate the jars and let them grow from there, they essentially take care of themselves.

P.S. READ READ READ  Repeat after me: "Learning is good, learning is fun, learning is good, learning is fun" Make that your mantra  The more you know the more successful you can be. I'm sure it'll be worth it to you when you end up with more tasty shrooms than you know what to do with.

Wow that was long winded. I apologize. I hope it was helpful and education to someone though.
