Would performing extremely strenuous exercise while on a water fast be dangerous and/or unhealthy?
    #11319328 - 10/25/09 05:47 PM (7 years, 11 months ago)

I would imagine so because exercising depletes essential nutrients, nutrients that are not being replaced if one is on a water fast. :cactuarrun:

I'm in no way a nutritionist, so maybe the answer to this question is extremely obvious to everyone, and I'm just too completarded to understand it.

Come on Poid, this should be a no-brainer even for you.

Well your body dehydrates while sweating. You should always drink before, during and after exercice.
So yeah, bad idea. If you're fasting water you might want to avoid exercice, don't you think?

A water fast is when you consume nothing but water, so of course I'm going to be drinking lots of water.

My bad, didn't realize the question was too silly that way.

Anyway, yes it's bad. Have you ever jogged on an empty stomach? You get tired very, very quickly, very hungry afterwards... aren't you worried about hypoglycemia, for example? The effort will be short, useless and very tiring for what it will be.

What exercices are you talking about? If it's something you can avoid, avoid it, exercising will only make you hungry and exhausted. You might get dizzy too. Not healthy.

Exercising while on a water fast is not a bright idea. When exercising, your body wants to use glucose for energy. However, since your on a water fast, you are not putting any glucose into your body. So since you dont have immediate access to glucose for energy, your body will use fat sources for energy, which will lead to the production of ketones, which is an acid. This could lead to ketoacidosis, a process in which your GI tract is eaten away by acid. In addition, with no glucose for energy, your body will start breaking down proteins, which will actually break your muscle fiber down. All in all, not recommended. Eat some food before  strenuous activity.

Basically, I am interested in learning what the specific effects of running a mile while on a water-fast are.

So, in conclusion, this doing this would not be a good idea?

It's your body.

What people are trying to say is, You're not HELPING YOURSELF by exercising on a water fast...and also it makes it more difficult to maintain the fast long-term.  People heal themselves of cancer and other nefarious diseases through water fasting but all they do is rest and the reason is because that way the body can use all the energy it does have to process healing.  I've done a ten day water fast and exercised every day but I don't feel I got as much benefit out of it as when I did a 5 day water fast and just rested all the time.  On my 18 day water fast I did nothing other then lay around...besides a few periods of fanatical dancing.

Let me know how much exercise you can do in a few days of fasting...I'm guessing your body will be demanding rest by then.

Take care

I don't plan on actually doing this, I was just wondering about what the specific effects of doing so would be.

okay, the specific effects would be; you will lose water, you will lose salts, you will burn muscle glycogen stores, you will probably break down some of your muscle protein for energy, (in states of starvation, the body prefers to hold on to fats, and will burn protein first).
you will take longer to recover from the exercise than usual, and will generally feel like shit for a good while after.

You'll probably get lightheaded and eventually pass out if you are trying to jog while water fasting.  Good luck!

After awhile, it was like tripping constantly, a spiritual revolution.  Changed my life.  I'd like to do it again one day, except maybe for a bit longer.

>>Would performing extremely strenuous exercise while on a water fast be dangerous and/or unhealthy?

Long Answer: It's complicated.

Short answer: However:

More likely than not it is dangerous.

One would worry about hyponatremia caused by only drinking water or excess water and the effects that occur on the brain and other organs from it as well as from exercise. I'd not do that if i were you.
