Question on flipping rye grain jars w/ Tyvek.
    #11319226 - 10/25/09 05:28 PM (8 years, 1 month ago)

I have 11x quart jars that are 95% colonized, mostly just the lowest part of the jar is not colonized like the rest of the jar. These jars are rye inoculated with LC. I've seen this problem before and it seems to be because of the moisture buildup at the bottom of the jars. Should I flip the jars to aid in colonization of the bottom rye grains?

My lids have a ~3/4" hole cut in the middle of them(according to the rye bitches rye tek) and they are covered with tyvek. My concern is that the moisture buildup will travel to the lids if the jars are flipped and invite contaminants if the tyvek becomes wet. I searched and could only find information on BRF cakes and verm layers. Any thoughts on rye jars?

Hey man I find that a quick invert and tap will slide the entire colonised cake/grains up about 1cm or less then I just turn them around and place them the normal way up.  It seems to hold there ok and the myc has that nice moisture and texture to grip…

It just provides a few mm of clearance for the myc to colonise.

I just tried that and it seems that they are pretty moist and the colonized grains just slide right back down. I tapped them on the bottom, made sure there was some clearance, and put them on their side for now - but this will just make the moisture go to whatever side of the jar is on the bottom so I'm not sure it will solve my problem. Any other ideas guys?

If you turn the jars over and if the grain still goes to the top then slides down again it is helping with GE.  The tyvek allows for this but turning it upside downforces any co2 outta the jar.  How much of a mess is the bottom of the wbs has it formed into a mass or is it just really wet?

^^^ agreed. Sounds like you need to address your grain prep procedures.
Flipping probably won't help, but I don't think it will hurt anything, flip a jar or two and see what you think about the matter.
Meanwhile, practice making better grain jars.

10 of the jars have colonized enough on the bottom to where it the grains stick so they are pretty compact, only 1 of them has a few loose grains at the bottom.

Wat were you planning on doing with those jars cause if your going to spawn you could easily get away with spawning most of them now

Planning to spawn to coir/coffee with a 1:4 ratio. I thought it was best to wait for full colonization before spawning to minimize the chance of contamination?

Yeah, I'd wait.

You might be able to tap the jars a bit and move the loose uncolonized grains around, without actually 'shaking the jars'. That might help.
But looking at the pic reinforces what I thought before- you could benefit from some fine tuning of your procedures. Both at the prep stage and later too- how many times did these jars get shaken as they were colonizing? Total counting when you shot them up.

The grain was soaked for 24 hours and then simmered for 30 mins. I knocked them up with an LC, and they were only shaken right after inoculation to distribute the LC. This was 10 days ago (10/16). After that I saw growth everywhere and it just exploded so I left it and decided not to shake them.

Thanks for everyone's input so far!

This is rye, not WBS, not sure how much of a difference that makes.

well for your next jars you should try to find some gypsum its just drywall make sure it doesnt have green siding on it.  Gypsum helps stabilize the ph i believe and makes shaking easier.  if this keeps happening maybe you should try shaking the jar at 25-30% it will slow it down a day tho or it could speed it up

Damn it. So does that mean these jars are going to be no good? There goes attempt #3 :frown:

FWIW I didn't see any moisture buildup when I inoculated. The grains looked relatively dry and this just looks like myc piss that has built up inside the jars.

why are these jars a bust?  i see no issues with them they just might take some extra colonization time.  I have spawned jars less colonized than those to coir before and had no issues
