ID Please-Shaggy Parasol?
    #11318780 - 10/25/09 04:15 PM (7 years, 11 months ago)

Habitat: Wood - Found in a mix of diciduous and coniferous trees.  In a park in Marysville WA.  There were about 20 of them clustered in an area at the edge of a park, off the grass and in some bush, and dead leaves, fallen limbs, pine needles, etc.

Gills: The gills are free, deep, some of them dont make it all the way to the stem.  Are white to brownish reddish.

Stem: Whitish, more white toward the top, and has brownish fibers towards the bottom.  Approx 2cm in diameter.  Fibrous tough stalk.

Cap: 3" to around 7".  Fibrous scales, and in between the scales you can see a white flesh.  When I cut it, it quickly stained a brown, reddish color.

Spore print color: In process to make sure its not green.

Bruising: Brownish reddish.  Its kinda pink at first, but turns brown.

Location: Marysville WA USA.  Puget Sound area.

It appears so. I have been seeing them EVERYWHERE around North Seattle, and they always appear this dark.

Hey TI's, are they just dark Chlorophyllum Rhacodes, or something related?

They are indeed C. rhacodes or C. brunneum, but I lean towards C. rhacodes. Definitely edible. Unless the gills are turning dark and looking shabby you can batter them in bread crumbs and fry them into mushroom schnitzels. You'll love it.

Awesome. Sounds delicious. I have about 10 patches within walking distance of my home.

I have planned on eating them, but usually catch them just a bit mature. They seem to fruit fast for such a large species.

Thanks GK!

Sweet thanks for the ID, I found another patch with about 20 of them.  Its def too many mushrooms for me to batter and fry, but def sounds fun to grab one once in a while for a lil snack when I get home

I eat those like once a week. So good. You could make a wicked cream of mushroom soup with 20 of them.

I advise any noob looking to identify mushrooms to fill out the ID form and provide clear photographs. Knowledge is a privilege and deserves respect. Let's give due props to the experts!

I see that you're checking for green spores, good idea. Hopefully the print comes out good because Shaggy Parasols are quite tasty. I have a small local patch that I pick from in fall. Yours look a bit different from mine though.

DAMN!  wish I woulda known that 2 hours ago.  My gf just make some chicken curry cassarole and she had to use a can of cream of mushroom....woulda been sweet to use the bag of mushrooms in my fridge.  Found prolly 60 more of them today out on Mercer Island...they are everywhere I go.

Sweet pics Glynis!

Thanks! Same to you. I figured it would help if you had some known edibles to compare against.

I assume your print came out white, correct? You are so lucky to find such a haul, as these are my favorite edibles. I am only able to find a couple a year, and they are smaller than yours. Nice work.

Yup, came out white.  Since this post, Ive probably picked 60 of them.  I keep picking them and feeding them to my friends when their over drinkin beers hangin out.  Gettin them interested in mushrooms

If you were close I would gladly pick them and give them to you.  Thats a bummer there arent more around you.  I feel like these things grow everywhere here.
