WBS JAR: Tiny hairs with black specks on the end?
    #11317956 - 10/25/09 01:48 PM (8 years, 1 month ago)

I have these very tiny (less than a mm in length) hairs with a single black speck the size of a grain of pepper on the tip sprouting from a couple (maybe 3 in total) grains on the top of my almost fully colonized jar.

The hairs are black - extremely tiny, and very few in number. Each of the grains that have them have perhaps only 3-5 of them. You have to look pretty closely to see them.

The rest of the jar and surrounding grains are colonizing nicely, but I think those few individual grains have something on or in them. Very weird. If anyone knows what they are, let me know - but otherwise I'm just going to watch and see if the myc takes it over.

I really hope nothing goes wrong - this jar has taken forever to colonize, and is finally almost done. If it fails now, I'm going to flip! :P

you actually found the spores on the print? people say "i got it from a bad print" all the time, but prints are not sterile to begin with. there are not perfect prints..

Yeah, I just found this picture: http://forums.mycotopia.net/attachments/fungi-growing-edible-medicinal-magic-mushrooms/74772d1201369651-black-pin-mold-black-pin-mold.jpg

And it looks exactly what those few grains have.

Damnit.. that is so frustrating. Ah well, one of my pint jars is almost done and it was made with a self-healing port and proper flame sterilization of the needle, so I think it should be ok to do some g2g transfers.

i would PC that jar as is for 60 min
then dump it out

you dont want to spread mold spores around your house

Triple quoted because it's the right thing to do.

That or just throw it out.

That raises a question. Can a contaminated jar which isn't disturbed, which is still sealed and has two layers of tyvex (one under the holes and one over the holes) still somehow spread contamination outside of the jar?

I'm going to PC the jar - I was just curious. I had some test jars which I let contaminate a while back that I've been watching the stages of mold growth stored in a seperate area.

Personally, I'd just throw it out. The jar costs less than a dollar.

Well ive never had a contam *knocks on wood* up until i used the prints i won....and the mold was growing only at the site of injection until i shook it...on 2 separate jars. SO i assumed bad print.
