Excalibur VS. Nesco dehydrators
    #11317775 - 10/25/09 01:12 PM (7 years, 11 months ago)

So i was gonna get the reputable NESC0 fd-61 snackmaster express and my wife though it was cheap looking(plastic) and persuaded me to invest in something long term since this will be my 2nd dehydrator... So im currently debating the "Excalibur brand" and would like to here some opinions/reviews for any of their models from users here on this site... Any help on honest pros-cons would be great... Im planning to order most likely this evening after a day of pondering.....

I actually have my eye on the 9 tray one for 150 i think ...

I understand it has "horizontal airflow" which is better then top/down heaters but i also read a customer review on one of their cheaper models , which implies that the fuse blew out after 10+ uses and after being replaced , stop working shortly after.. Which the customer complains after customer support that"excalibur" brand doesnt stand by i product.....

As for the NESCO i read it uses "plastic #7"which may leech toxins  when heated..... Which sounds like a big negative factor there...

So any one with either experiences regarding  any product in relation would be greatly appreciated and taken to account....Also im aware it prolly cheaper and does practically the same thing but The point is long term , effectiveness...

Please +REP if i've been of any help... thanks!!!

Dosent plastic #7 mean it wont leach toxins? I thought the lower the number of plastic such as 1-3 releases toxins when heated and the higher number like 5+ didnt

OH and I have a Nesco and it has done me perfectly so far. Its nice because you can buy replacements for the trays if any were to break.

Other way around, #2 is HDPE, or high-density polyethylene, is pretty much harmless. Polycarbonate, I think maybe #7?, has an estrogen mimicking compound. They use it a lot in water bottles, including the ones on coolers, yay.

To keep this somewhat on topic, I doubt it matters much with dehydrators, the surface contact with the food [or whatever] is limited. My Magic Chef has polycarbonate shelves and I'm not losing sleep over it.

Interesting...... Any info if its less maintenance in comparison ?!  On the nesco even if you add extra trays , you have to constantly rotate for a balance dry process , hence i was thinking maybe the 9 tray excalibur , would be easier , space and speed ..

That plastic #7 sounds bad, cause i would be using  the dehydrator often .....

But damn those excaliburs are bit pricey , but my wife hates when i buy cheap things,

I have the Nesco 425 watt 'Snackmaster' and it works great. No need to rotate trays.
