55 gal. barrel, used for hydraulic fluid (Citgo)
    #11317593 - 10/25/09 12:40 PM (8 years, 4 hours ago)

is a barrel previously filled with petroleum products okay to use after heavily rinsing...
it had hydraulic fluid in it before. The barrel also says contains petroleum products so I'm guessing the fluid was petroleum.
Any thoughts?

i have used those types of barrels for rainwater harvesting. its fine. clean out very well with laundry soap (because it doesn't foam up) also use a long stick with a rag attached to it to scrub all the way to the bottom of the barrel. then rinse with three flushes of clean hot water.

Personally I would steer clear of any thing like petroleum or antifreeze barrels.

There are too many food grade ones that there shouldn't be any reason to even consider using these other ones.

the food one cost 25$
the hydraulic fluid barrel was free
I think it might be worth buying a food barrel though...

any other suggestions?

WHAT R U GONNA USE IT FOR.. I KNOW THAT HYDRAULIC OIL HAS A VERY POISONOUS ADDITIVE, OR SOMETHING IN IT. our heavy machinery guy had a line blow on him and it got in a open wound and his whole body swelled up// i get old barrels that had lacquer from a cabinet shop and set them on fire. but lacquer burns. its hard to say..

I was planning on using it to pasteurize straw.
this doesn't sound worth it

It's not worth taking a chance.  Food grade barrels are available everywhere and cheap. The most I've ever paid for one is $20. I have over a dozen out in my barn for future use.

Craigslist people are rip-offs, the barrels I see on there are always WAY over priced. Fuck them.

Look around town for people with tons of barrels in their yard.

They will sometimes give them away. So I've heard.
