Spawning cakes to coir.... and I'm already salivating

Just crumbled 3 cakes and mixed with about twice as much coir as sub.
I found these great cake trays that come with plastic lids that snap on. I poked a couple holes with a hot paper clip end and set it in my "area of incubation".
I'll post pics when I can look.
Only thing I'm worried about is of course contamination cause I didn't pasteurize the coir but besides that, avoiding overlay. I've read a few posts where people spawned cakes to coir without a casing layer and got some overlay...
Should I sprinkle some field cap. verm after its 3 day incubation?

well Im not an expert by all means but I think paper clip sized holes might be too small. When I think of the holes for that I think fork sized. Just me tho.
But you should have pasteurized the coir

Ehh. I know.
Lets just pray.
I saw people usually used plastic wrap and tin foil and poke holes with toothpicks so I figured this would be fine... for 3 days till I put it in the FC....

how do you get overlay without casing?
and did you tape your holes or not?
lastly coir is pretty contam resistant anyway from what I understand.

Yeah I heard that its fairly contam resistant. I didn't tape the holes. I guess I could but..
ehhhhhhh
I'm wicked baked right now and their in a closed cabinet above my fridge.
I'll get it later
About the overlay... I think overlay can happen in casings or straight spawning and fruiting.
It looked like it happened in another post I read. type cakes to coir in the search box if you wanna find it. I'm too baked to go get it. but its there... ohhh its there

overlay is a condition that applies solely to casings, as far as I know...

I see what your saying and tend to agree, although it does delay fruiting, and expanding mycelium without adding nutrients does not seem like the best idea...

so far everything looks good. Checked this morning and lots of nice myc growth.
Thanks for the overlay clarification.
It took me so long just to break enough off the brick to get a decent amount at field cap. that I just said fuck it... im not putting this in a pillowcase, putting in a pc with the weight off, getting the water to boiling then shutting it off then waiting till its cool, then wringing it out, then mixing it with the spawn....
I'm livin on the edge for this one

yeah overlay is for casing only... you cannot overlay a bulk sub since you need it to be 100% colonized anyway. As for the coir, I've had some succes just letter the coir hydrating in very hot water until it cool.

I still got 2 cakes nesting in the incubation area. If this tray goes awry I'll pasteurize the next batch...
SO what's the consensus of casing the bulk sub? A light sprinkling of field cap verm?
or just fruit straight form the coir?

its not really needed with cubes and just adds more time and another step another window for contams
its personal preference really
i would only case if you are fruiting sraight grains
