Chlorophyllum rhacodes/brunneum? ID Please
    #11314951 - 10/24/09 11:15 PM (8 years, 5 hours ago)

I ate a few grams of baeos last night with my girlfriend and we had some beers and carved pumpkins. Had a really wonderfully fantastic trip together and this morning, when she fell asleep and the sun came up, I went out for a hunt. Came back with these guys.

Habitat: Grass in someone's yard, maybe on buried wood.

Gills: White. See photo.

Stem: White, bulbous base. The brown look in the pictures is from dirt. The stems were all white like the way it is left of the annulus in that pic.

Cap: White with specks or something. Don't really know how to describe it. See pictures.

Spore print color: White

Bruising: Where I broke the stem turned an orangeish or maybe pinkish color that eventually turned brown.

Location: Picked in Oregon

They smell kind of sweet. I don't know. Can't put my finger on it but it smells good. Sorry about the quality of the pics. If there's any info i'm missing needed to get a proper ID let me know.

I was hoping they were chlorophyllum rhacodes but I'm really new to this. According to wikipedia, parasols are different from amanitas in that the flakes are a darker color than the surrounding cap, whereas with amanitas the flakes are a lighter color than the surrounding cap. I don't have a field guide that describes these however, so any help would be much appreciated.

Here are some photos of a younger specimen I got. The veil hadn't opened yet when I picked him this morning, but it has now.

Can I get a TI to comment on this? I'm pretty sure it's not Amanita pantherina. The stem is smooth and the caps are white with brown flecks, not the other way around. Check out this picture of pantherinas. I don't think this is my mushroom.

No they're supposed to be quite tasty. Chlorophyllum molybdites is similar looking and poisonous but has a green spore print. It seems that Chlorophyllum rhacodes is also known as macrolepiota rhacodes, or used to be, from what I've read on the internet, but it is commonly known as the shaggy parasol.

C. rhacodes has a white spore print and is edible (with cation) It also was called Lepiota rhacodes and probably went by Macrolepiota for a bit too. C. molybdites has the greenish spores and is poisonous. I think that the one in the northwest is Chlorophyllum brunneum (correct me if I'm wrong)

Thank you etibem. Do you know of any other look-alikes I should be aware of or features I need to be sure of before eating? The spore print is definitely white. I'm pretty darn sure at this point but I'd like to be more confident before I cook them up. I wouldn't want any nasty mistakes. When tasting them the first time, I should cook them and then just eat a few very small bites or something to make sure I don't get sick? This is my very first edible find and I'm super excited. Anyone have suggestions on recipes for these guys?

Can I get someone who has experience with these to comment? I still don't have a confirmed ID.

Listen to what YCAE said.
You can tell that they are not an Amanita, because the scales on the cap are not universal veil remnants, they are actually part of the pileum. They won't wash or rub off like the spots on an Amanita do. The reddish bruising of the severed trama also indicates Chlorophyllum rhacodes or C. brunneum. Well cooked they are very good edibles.
