Sida Cordifolia from seed? *Update*
    #921801 - 10/01/02 11:27 AM (21 years, 6 months ago)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Does anyone have experience growing Sida Cordifolia from seed?

If so, can you explain your technique for germination?

There appears to be little information about cultivating this plant on the WWW, any information would be much appreciated.

Below is some general information for those of you not familiar with this plant (http://www.pioneerherbs.com/sida_cordifolia.htm).

DESCRIPTION :
A small herb, branched and hairy. Leaves 2.5-5 cm long, cordate, ovate oblong, petioles 1.2-3.8 cm long. Flowers small yellow.Fruit 6-8 mm diameter, capsules.

PHYTOACTIVE :
The main alkaloid present is asparagin. Fatty oil, phytosterol, mucins, potassium nitrate, resins and resin acids are also known to be present. No tannins or glycosides have been identified. The main portion of the alkaloid was identified as ephedrine(1).Recent analyses have revealed that ephedrine and y-ephedrine constitute the major alkaloids from the aerial parts. From the aerial parts and the roots the following were also obtained 6 -phenyl ethylamine, carboxylated tryptamines, quinazoline alkaloids, hypaphorine, vasicinone, vasicine and vasicinol in varying amounts(2). An anti- microbial alkaloid cryptolepine, ephedrine and vasicine are reported from the different species of Sida plant(3).

DIRECTIONS FOR USE :

Anticonvulsant and antipyretic activities of the plant have been observed(4) Studies done on rats suggest S. cordifolia has antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral activity. Antiprotozoal activity against E histelytica(1) and anti-heimintic activity against H. nana and A. galli has also been demonstrated. Anticancer activity was seen against human nasopharyngeal carcinoma (in tissue culture) and lymphoid leukaemia and Sarcoma 180 in mice(4).

A decoction of the root with ginger is given by ayurvedic physicians in intermittent fever. It is also administered in fever accompanied by rigour. The powdered root bark is administered with milk and sugar as treatment for urinary urgency and leucorrhoea. The seeds are used to treat urinary infections. They are also believed to be aphrodisiac.

CONTRAINDICATION :

In routine doses the plant is well tolerated.

FORMULATION AND DOSAGE :

Powder : 0.5 - 1 gm b.i.d.

Fresh juice : 15 - 30 ml b.i.d.

Shatapakiksheer Bala : 12 - 24 ml o.d. / t.i.d.

Bala taila : Topical use.

1 week after planting the first seed has germinated

The seeds were left in water for 12 hour prior to planting and planted at room temperature in potting soil.

Is anyone interested in this plant??

eh, guess not... I think good old ephedra plant is good enough.. although it'd be nice to add to a collection, i'd consider trying it once i move and have more space for my collection as i have it, which is taking up too much space.

I try growing as many ethoplants as possible and like to experiment with less known plants.

One source stated that plant was native to central America, however others have stated it is native to tropical and sub-tropical India and Nepal.

Update:

1/2 of the seedlings have their own little pots now

I damaged some of the roots when transplanting , but they seem OK .

I am growing these plants in two environments.

Environment 1 = some direct sunlight & non humidified environment
Environment 2 = less direct sunlight & humidified environment. (indoor green house).

They are growing quicker in environment 1 with larger leafs. All plants are healthy.
