I read somewhere the other day that there is kitty litter that has silica gel I think it was, that can be used as a dessicant. Does this work good? Can it be used like damp rid, or do you need to use a lot more? What kind of kitty litter is this, those crystals? Is there really a tek? If so, can someone let me in on it, please  Thanks

i think its just a weak dissicant... might work. but a jar of dissicant from wal mart is cheaper and better

I think alot of people would beg to differ rommstein2001. I've never used cat litter myself but have heard that it is equally as good as normal dessicant and you get a hell of alot more for your money. I think I saw some in a supermarket today in the UK although it didn't mention anywhere on the bag that it was made from silica gel..
Does it just look like clear crystals people ???

The crystal kitty litter is made out of silica gel and is a great dessicant. So it clay kitty litter, they use it to get the musty smell out of old books. HOWEVER - do you want the dust from that to get on your little doods? Unlike cat poo or books, you're planning on eating these things when you're done dryin' em

you will need to use alot more kitty litter than damp rid for the same effects, however kitty litter is extremely cheap and will last longer than.

My kitty litter isn't very cheap compared to Epson salt. I think you can use it if you bake for a while to dry it out.

Yeah that stuff. It's little silica beads, about 2mm diameter. I've only heard of it because I was looking for a cheaper alternative to Tidy Cat, and for a while I tried various things with my cats. Silica, wood chips, clay balls. My cats are too picky, and they just ended up shitting all in the bathtub instead. So this stuff does not work with cats, but it might with mushrooms. Back to Tidy Cat.
Tidy Cat, however, will probably Not work with mushrooms.

Hahahahha........
I got my cat the silica beads and she was NOT impressed!! In one day she managed to empty over half the contents all over the floor!! Those little beads bounce like crazy and are a bitch to clean up. She also refused to shit or piss in the box but had no trouble using the beads outside, which bye the way absorb piss miraculously! So i guess my point is that they...............well........uh.... they absorb moisture!?

Ok, so besides the litter then, what else can be used with success? Epsom salt? Didnt know about that.

If you get a dehydrator, you have to disable or severly restrict the heating element.

No so! My deyhdrator goes down to 35*C! Thats just warm not hot and it works great!!

For an ounce or less I have found that the top of my monitor works fine with no noticible potency loss. I just spread them oput and leave them overnight and they're cracker dry.

Unlike all the hearsay posted. I have and will continue to use kitty litter as my only form of dessicant. I have used dri-rite, and even molecular seive, and found them no more effective than the litter.
The CRYSTALS litter, that is pure crystal, is 100% pure silica gel, one of the most effective dessicants known. I take a rubbermaid, dump in a bag of the litter, and can dry 1-2 oz (dry) at a time. Then I take the litter, dump it into the oven at 350 for an hour. And it's back to new. Cools down VERY fast too.
I PROMISE you, that if you try this method, you will be as satisfied as anyone has ever been using any dessicant. 24 hours, cracker dry. Reuseable, readily available, and CHEAP.
Please, try it before you make assumptions. This method rocks.
I have used epsom salts, and they were not NEARLY as effective. It took 2-3 days to do the same job, and they still never got 100% cracker dry.
Kitty litter, it's the way to go.
