ID Request - Pan Cinctulus?
    #11311743 - 10/24/09 02:27 PM (8 years, 10 months ago)

I spent the past few days on the WA coast and yesterday was really foggy, so I figured it would be a good day to go hunting some libs.  The owners of these fields don't take too kindly to people on their land and have been known to shoot warning shots to scare mushroom pickers off.  So the fog helps me to be stealthy.

I checked two fields, found some libs in both fields and in the second field I found what I thought may be P. Strictipes.  I found 4 specimens which all look similar to the libs I find but they are not umbonate as you can see in the pictures and they seem to have slightly redder stipes.  They were all from the same patch.

I took them home last night to print and this morning they looked like pan cinctulus caps and they had black prints, which rules out P. Strictipes, could they be cinctulus? Any ideas?

Location: Picked coastal WA

Habitat: Grassy field with some brush, lots of manure around: cow, deer, elk, bear, possibly others.

Gills: Brownish.

Stem: reddish.

Cap: Look like lib caps but without the umbo when wet, look like cinctulus caps almost 24 hrs after picking.

Spore print color: Black.

Bruising: No color change was observed.

Pic 1: Regular lib

Pics 2-4: Specimens 2-5 while still growing, very wet as it had been raining very hard for about 12 hrs.

Pics 5: All 4 about 11 hours after picking

Pic 6: Shitty gill shot, forgot to take one in the field so I took it at night at home.

Pic 7: After printing

Pic 8: Speaks for itself

They are Panaeolus but its hard to tell what type without microscopic examination.  They might be Panaeolus papilionaceus var. parvisporus.
