Amanita Species ID, Please and Thanks
    #11311677 - 10/24/09 02:18 PM (8 years, 1 month ago)

Habitat:
This mushroom was found in Dekalb county, GA, USA, along the deciduous/pine tree line border of a public park.  It was growing up through layers of pine needles on the ground.

Gills:
White, free, and crowded gills.

Stem:
About 2 inches in length, 1.5 cm in diameter, yellowish white to a rusty brown in color.  Inside the stipe is solid and meaty, but not necessarily fibrous.

Cap:
3.5 inches in diameter, orange in the middle and yellowing boldy toward the cap edge.  White warts cover the top of the cap.  Cap shape is the very definition of "plain".  (Been reading up on my myco terms!)

Spore print color:
Processing now....

Bruising:
No bruising at all.

Other information:
No readily identified scent.  Even lacks the "standard" mushroom smell.

Thanks in advance peeps!

It's an Amanita muscaria.

The bright head colour is just a sign of age...

Yeah I am hoping it is a Muscaria, but I will wait on a TI to confirm.  Thanks for the input.  On a side note, all the muscaria or potential muscaria here in GA are bright yellow, I believe they are labeled amerimuscaria.

I was going to call it Amanita muscaria var. persicina, but the bulb at the base of the stem is very unusual.  I have never seen it flare out like that.

Also the warts aren't quite as distinct as they are in A. muscaria - They seem a but more cottony and not as tall.

Maybe its something interesting, or maybe its A. muscaria var. persicina with an oddly shaped vulva.

It had an annulus, right?

There is no annulus.  It seems like what might have become the annulus just stayed at the base, if that makes sense.

According to the Wikipedia page, for what it's worth, the annulus in Amanita muscaria var. persicina may be degraded or even absent.  I think it is Amanita muscaria var. persicina.

What about Amanita muscaria var. guessowii VeselĂ˝?  It seems to have a bulb similar to this, and the same color more or less.

The bulb seems sac-like..
Perhaps it is an atypical specimen of A. persicina or maybe its something completely new.
Put it up on MO and see what Rod has to say.

Will do.  Well I posted it to mushroomobserver.org, a first for me.  I can't wait to see what this "Ron" says, or anyone for that matter.

Thanks for all the info and tips as always guys.

So would it be safe to say that this variant of Amanita Muscaria would contain Ibotenic Acid and Muscimol, like the others?  If so, would it be safe to first cook, and then eat a very, very tiny piece as described in various threads on this site?  I am immensely interested in trying muscaria, given its historical and cultural significance.

Or should I not fuck with it at all unless I get a 100% ID down to the species and variation?

OK I found 2 more specimens in the same habitat.  These have fairly clear concentric rings at the base, so maybe they are the muscaria I will finally get to try.

Let me know what you think, thanks.

In those pics, imo, it looks like every Amanita Muscaria var. Persicina i have ever seen. Im very confident thats what it is. But not knowing 100% is a legit reason to leave them be for the time.

Very true.  Such was the case with my last find, more or less ID'd, but not 100%.  I will wait to see what a TI says as always.

Word, thanks for the ID.  So this being an Amanita Muscaria variant I can "safely" cook it and try a piece, per the Muscaria consumption threads and advice I have read on here?

Just dry them out good, and this is what I do...after drying good put them over the toaster on a fork to heat them up (right before consumption), this seems to make them more potent because the bad chems are converted to the good by the heat.

You can actually taste the ibotenic acid when you breath in and out, its cool, a great pain reliever as well as sleep aid or energy enhancer depending on dose.
