Hen of woods? various finds.

1.Habitat:
This was growing at the base of large white oak.

Gills:
white pores

Stem:
none

Cap:
cluster

Spore print color:
haven't taken, but could if necessary

Bruising:
none

Other information:
Not sure if this was a hen of the woods. If so, anyone have any suggestions on how to clean and prepare?







2.Habitat:
These were growing on a pile of dead oak branches.

Gills:
Yellow

Stem:
light yellow/orange

Cap:
orange/yellow

Spore print color:
In progress, looks like it will be orange?

Bruising:
turns darker orange with a tint of brown.





3.Habitat:
These were growing at the base of two dead white oak stumps.

Gills:
brown

Stem:
light beige, splits easy.

Cap:
dark brown, meaty feeling.

Spore print color:
In progress, no signs of anything yet.

Bruising:
Cap is getting darker ring around edge,stipe darker brown where picked.






4.Habitat:
These were growing off decaying oak log.

Gills:
none

Stem:
none





5.Habitat:
These were growing off decaying oak log.

Gills:
none

Stem:
none

Nice hens!! MMMMMmmmmmmmmmmmmm cut um up n small pcs and cook like you would morels - i think the hens taste almost exactly like morels - if not a little better!!

Sweet...thanks for the id, they are in the frying pan as I type. This will be my first time trying one of my finds.

Thanks Alan, quick ID! Do you think its worth picking the gymnopilus? I only took the two for id purpose and there were about 50 throughout. I would like to try and get them to grow in another area.

nice hunt! #2 i have always found theese when hunting, thought they were a gym, but did not have a bitter taste, like other gyms.  Almost has an active smell and flavor, pleasant actually, but did not notice that intense of a reaction, only ate 2 fresh specimens though.

Supposedly S. ostrea has a smooth top and subtomentosum a hairy cap... I personally think that it's all the same species.
