Mushrooms without rain?
    #11308500 - 10/23/09 10:12 PM (8 years, 6 months ago)

I didn't think that mushrooms could grow without rain period, but today i found a massive handful of inactive conocybes in my yard right in the pile of horse manure and woodshavings and i think another conocybe growing under an oak tree in my yard farther away which was also inactive.

There are alot of places near where i live to look for shrooms, about 15 fields i can get to in less than 10 minutes, and i was wondering, since i don't know much about shroom hunting, are there any active mushrooms that grow in florida in the "winter" when it does not rain?

I'm in Florida and it's definitely not winter yet. Mushrooms do not necessarily need rain to initiate fruiting, humidity is quite a requirement for some species (like Psilocybe), but there are lots of other factors that initiate growth, such as running out of available nutrients, competing organisms, etc.

So how likely to find actives would i be if i went out hunting tomorrow?

Remember also that sometimes there are aquifers under certain areas which provide moisture to the ground surface, mostly at night when the sun is out.

eh or if its fresh manure, any fresh manure contains a certain amount of water/moisture, which is normaly perfect for mushrooms, and especially since its also made of the perfect nutrients for alot of different species. If you live near a horse pasture and the pies dont freeze over like they do here in Va, your in good shape, id say.
