What should I do to my lids?
    #11308160 - 10/23/09 09:08 PM (7 years, 11 months ago)

Ok so i bought 6 jars, pictured below and was wondering what you would recommend to do to the lids for filter etc.

As I have been looking and on cake PF teks they seems to have 4 needle holes, Rye grain has 1 needle hole and a filter and as for LC im not sure.

I am planning to do a few rye, a few PF cake (BRF&Verm) and maybe 1 LC jar.

But am unsure what to do as i only have 1 shot to drill the lids and do not want to mess that up. I have purchased hydrophobic cotton wool thinking I could use this?

You have a pressure cooker?

Ok, then skip PF tek for now. For grains, use a single 1/4" (6mm) hole with your hydrophobic cotton for a filter.
If you like, use silicone in a second hole for an injection port- or just shoot through/past the cotton.

LC with plastic lids is trickier. Best bet is a polyfil port near the edge and a silicone port opposite, but it's still going to be messy.

thats what i do for my LC. Except I use tyvek instead of the polyfil. And just like DocT said it does get messy when you shake. Unless you have a magnetic stirrer. But I'm not lucky enough to have one yet.

How comes I should skip PF tek? Am i right in saying they just have the four injection points and no breathing hole?

I will see if i can pick up some silicone and make an injection point as this will be safer.

As for LC im not sure if i will make one, maybe just add water to grain jar and shake with some tinfoil over the top!? Obviously going to be messy but hopefully should work.

Thanks for the help.

an alternative that iv'e used for the past few years is the bicycle repair patch tec.

treat the hole in the lid as you would a tyre puncture, scuff it up a little, add glue to both surfaces and allow to dry for a moment before applying.i normally use pieces cut to size from an old innertube kept for the purpose.cycle repair shops will often give these away,if you ask.

after injecting i add a piece of micropore tape for extra peace of mind

whether low pressure sucks or high pressure blows...
it's a bugger to cycle in

A tip for new growers, buy items that last long term and short term last.

Sorry that didnt quite make sense to me. I have the jars which I can reuse and the myco bag was so I could get a jump start but that messed up so have to start again. I need a new spore syringe so i have something to begin with and hopefully I will not have problems when I try and knock p my new myco bag and home made jars.

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/10628004 build these.

What I did I made 4 self healing innoc ports and a Gas Exchange port in the middle of all my lids. Now I can use them for PF cakes/LC's/Grians

For PF cakes you still need a breather hole for Gas Exchange

I like using these:

Sturdy enough to handle being PC'd repeatedly and soft enough to be shake up PF cakes to speed up colonization.

I have a new method I prefer even more though.

Spawn bags /w filter patch + impulse sealer.  I did a couple bags with 2.5 quarts of modified pf mix in it.  Took about 2 1/2 weeks to fully colonize.

Thanks Shea & Spong, I will look into the silicone as a lot of Shroomers seem to use it as injec ports so will browse my local shop for some.

And I already have the plastic jars here so will not need anymore and as my larger jars were not in stock will be sent these: (on left)

So on half of my jars I will have a perfect filter built in so will just need injec points. As for the other jars I will be using the Hydroponic cotton wool as I did buy it so might as well try it. I think I will go for just 2 hole on the jars shown in 1st post and four for the ones in this post.

Well I managed to get some red RTV silicone so have used that over my 5mm hole and for the other placed a piece of hydroponic cotton wool for air exchange.

Have placed them in my pressure cooker for 90mins with BRF in so will be knocking these up very soon.
