Liberty caps with dark stems?
    #11306072 - 10/23/09 01:04 PM (14 years, 5 months ago)

I found a patch of what I figure are liberty caps, however their stems are a redish/orangeish. Is this common? Are there any other species they could be? I am in Newfoundland, Canada.

They are not libs. You found inactive Pans, most likely.

If you ask if it is common for Psilocybe semilanceata to have orange-reddish stipes, how can you be so certain that you are able to safely ID a Psilocybe?

Well until theres pics nobody can say either way for certain. So pics=ID.  The stem color sounds like that of a Pan. to me also. I have picked Libs with a quite yellowish stem though.
Good point Kahuna.

Found a camera.

Kahuna: Even someone with a fraction of the experience I have could clearly pick these out as psilocybes.

Notice the second from the right is particularly dark.

Darker stems due to age. That's common, yes.

Thanks koraks!

I have never noticed dark stems on any of the libs I have picked before. The concept these were particularly dark due to age makes sense in this scenario. I saw the patch a week ago but couldn't pick them until today. In that time we have had cold, wet weather, and even some fluries.

Yeah, some people like drama. Big thanks to koraks for answering the question asked objectively, and not using it to boost shroom-ego.

Those are libs. Showing the pics right away would have cleared that up.
And I disagree that it is common. Only very small fraction of all libs I find have this dark discoloration due to being aged.

A lot of the P. Strictipes i've found have a red colouration on the stems, though I find it on Semi's quite often also. I think it may be related to the soil they're growing in.
