atl#7 another contam concern, this time brown powder at top of wbs

growing sclerotia may be easy if (unlike me) you can inoculate it and then forget about it, stop toying with it. i just cant help to look at it everyday and measure the size of the growing truffles, watch for contam etc...



well in a few of my jars that seem rather healthy, i have this strange brown powder like substance on the top of the substrate, wbs.

the first thing i though was, i added way too much gypsum. i added it after loading the jars with wbs and didnt mix it in to well. maybe it absorbed some junk and turned brown? there is no smell at all. its only on the top of the substrate. it doesnt seem to be growing.

before i inoculate a petri dish with this brown stuff to see if it grows, can someone please take a few guesses at what it could be? remember i added way too mcuh gypsum.

oh yes forgot to mention, i have jars of atl#7 and possibley some in jalisco. these are about 1 month old. the jar i have pictures of i opened. i have not poked around yet. it is a very dry, brown powder. some where done with LC some were done with agar. there seems to be more in the agar ones.

No, thats bad.  It looks like you have some good mycelium in there but its being overwhelmed by that brown spored contaminate.  Probably a brown mold like Botrytis.

thats what i was afraid to hear. luckly it was not all of the jars. all the more reason i made a new glovebox since then.

ill empty them out and wash em to start over.
