Possible Agaricus Arvensis.
    #11305440 - 10/23/09 10:53 AM (14 years, 4 months ago)

I know it's an agaricus species of some sort.  I'm hoping for Agaricus Arvensis, however it's probably Californicus or Xanthodermatei, I'm hoping it's not though.  I picked two paperbags worth when I found them in california.  They were at a rest stop in the field.

Habitat:
In grassy field near Oregon California Border (central), under different species of oak trees.  Cool and grassy.

Gills:
Offwhite in unopened pins, pinkish brown to brown as cap matures.  Pink is not strong, only in immature opening fruits.  Sporeprint is dark brown.

Stem:
2-5" in length, up to 1" in diametre, thick, older species feel woody and have a hollow-ish stem, strong stems though, thick fleshy.

Cap:
Diameter, color, texture, conical/spherical, convex/concave, etc.
Caps that start a couple inches in diameter and mature to up to 5" across.  Off-white with slightly brown tint to the top.  Possibly from spore deposits.

Spore print color:
Brown.

Bruising:
No noticeable yellowing or bruising.  Maybe SLIGHT brownish bruising to the base of the stem.  (most likely just from dirt).
Bruising yellow on the margin.  Still no bruising of the stem base.

Other information:
I'm not sure what aniseed smells like.  The mushroom does not smell bad, it smells slightly mushroomy and tasty.

Ah, it does stain yellow around the margin.  So far the base of the stem isn't yellow though.  What do you think?

Xanny or californicus. Probably cant tell without microscope. Crack it open and smell it and if you pay close attention youll probably think of chlorine (like swimming at a pool). They do sometimes smell a little good if you dont really get into it.

You sure?  In all my field guides the bruising occurs to all three of these species, but in arvensis the stem isn't yellow or doesn't bruise?

A lot of the Xanthodermus i find doesnt have a totally brown cap like that, usually more in the middle and white towards the margin. Im sure they can vary though, and with age.

Ooh, I forgot a scent description.  I don't smell ink.

There's also the possibility of mixed species.  They grew in fairy rings around oak and spruce.

I always smell a swimming pool

Might have Arvensis. Dont try to convince yourself though.
